Beautiful girl, great photo.
But this is clearly not from the time period suggested by hairstyle, dress and architecture (early mid-60s), and the "days gone by" is probably only a year or two:

Mainly so drivers and the other students could identify you as a crossing guard and be aware of you as you controlled the pedestrian traffic at certain specified intersections near the school.
It was pretty neat to be part of the twenty or thirty students who were a part of the group. You'd show up 45 minutes before school started so you could be at your post 30 minutes before the first bell and you'd stay until 15 minutes after the bell rang in the morning. In the afternoons you got out of class 15 minutes before school was out to get to your post and stayed at your post for about 30 minutes after school ended.
The best part of it for us in our little town of Ashland was that all of us got to go on a week-long field trip to DC to see the Capitol, the White House, the various monuments and memorials, and the Smithsonian. On the way to DC there would be a stop at Monticello, and there would also be a morning spent at Arlington National Cemetery where two of the patrol members would have been selected to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

I wouldn't be one today. When I was younger, there were very few mothers that drove their kids to school. You walked, rode a bike or took the bus. I pass by an elementary school frequently. There is a line of cars down the side street, there is a line of cars down the next street and into a parking lot.
Then the city decided to put cameras during school hours in front of the school where I have never seen a kid. Never. 25mph on a 5 lane road. I read where the "take" was in the double digit millions.
