1942: “Nyssa, Oregon. Japanese-American boys at the newsstand on their weekly visit to town.” [from the relocation camp, presumably]

What this country did to Japanese citizens during WWII was nothing short of criminal. It didn't matter that most of them were long time U.S. Citizens----they looked different and were easily picked out.

The government didn't do anything to Italians or German citizens like they did to the Japanese. Many of those people lost homes, businesses, their life savings, etc. and it sucked to be them.

Not arguing your point about treatment of the Japanese, but remember, our homeland and military instillations were not attacked by the Germans or Italians. That had to influence the US government's and citizens' response to Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, and the few incursions into the Western mainland. I would bet those caused no little concerns to Americans.

The comic book that the Jap kid on the right is reading is the one-shot issue of "Napoleon and Uncle Elby," published in 1942. I recognized it from the small glimpse of the cover. Based on the comic strip. Napoleon was Elby's dog.

Au contraire, mon ami. I know a woman whose German father was deported and never again seen by her because the U.S. did vet German nationals. Don't know about Italians but I suspect at least some of them as well. To the best of my knowledge none were interred in camps ala the Japanese.

Contributing Miss Florida 1930. The mermaid on her bathing suit is a cute touch. Looks as though the costumes of the era could become more interesting when wet.
