People think that things were cheap back then, and by today’s standards they were. But folks were making a whole lot less money back then and those prices were out of reach for most working people just like things are today for working folks.
When I entered the job market 4 bucks an hour was considered a decent wage starting out. Things didn’t seem so cheap on that wage.

I started my first real job as a young teen in the mid 60's and the prevailing minimum wage was $1.25 an hour. At the time I figured it I could find a job making $400 a month I'd be living pretty high on the hog but that meant I'd have to be making $2.50 an hour and that was out of reach for a youngster at the time.
I can remember going to the local Western Auto store and drooling over their selection of Western Flyer bikes on their showroom floor. A nice 26 in. boy's bike with shiny new paint and lots of chrome were selling for $40 and the fancy "English Racers" as the multiple speed bikes were called back then were about $75 IIRC.

This needs to be played nationwide. The only thing he neglected to mention was, make abortion fashionable and easy to get.
