I am more critical of police than the average person, and I think the whole "back the blue" mentality shows a servile attitude towards authority that works to excuse both individual and systemic violations of rights by police, often in a way that particularly harms minority communities.

Well, sometimes I forget that we as lowly citizens have no right to expect police to follow the law or be held accountable for their actions. Like all public servants, they can't be expected to do their jobs in the face of criticism.
