Would you be upset if your wife or GF’s coworker had a “pet” name for her? What if she had a pet name for him? Not like a nickname that everyone uses, but, like, just a little private joke name between the two of them. Asking for a friend.

Like baby? That would be weird to me, since I don't even really use pet names with my husband. The most he gets out of me is using the first letter of his name.

It's inappropriate, especially for married women.

ETA: if the guy is gay it's expected. However, I doubt that is the example being given.
