I would say that is pretty impressive without a “formal” education.
Apparently he did a pretty good job of teaching her the three R’s. Reading, writing and arithmetic.
Self taught.
People would look much smarter if they streaky read the things they're talking about.

I went to school so it wasn't that bad, but my dad was a (still is) a complete dispensationalist. For those who don't know, this is someone that believes in the "Left Behind" version of the end times.
There was a book that came out that was very popular in the dispensational circles - 88 Reasons the World Will End in 1988. My dad read through it once a week throughout the end of 1987 and 1988. He believed in this crackpot theory to the point that I was scared.
Every time a camel farted in the Middle East he sat us down and theorized this. There was no internet to fact check and we went through that entire year scared to death. My sister tragically died in July of 1988. He almost celebrated it because his thoughts were that she would not have to go through the end of the world. My mother was distraught at losing a child and my dad did not waiver.
Obviously, the world did not end in 1988. There were some "recalculations" and my dad bought one of those big arse satellites to watch a particular televangelist.
In 1990, when it was announced that we were going to war in Iraq. Dad went into panic mode. We had several all night "prayer meetings" and things got really weird in our church. Obviously, that war did not last long and later in 1991 the Jimmy Swaggart incident happened and my dad got out of the "world is coming to an end" stage.

Everyone has to "keep up with the Jones'".
Which I never understood. I've always been the type who likes to go against the grain. Do what I like and not whatever everyone flocks just because it becomes a trend so I don't get that mentality.

Nah, they just think they do. Advertising, media... pushing insecurity and selling the products to temporarily fix it.
People who drop out of mainstream society, like those in your Op, are probably the wise ones.
