My boss is one of those guys who makes you feel guilty for calling in regardless of the reason. Like you done fricked up his entire day and now the whole company will probably crumble.

Anyone else have a boss like that?

A lot of bosses are like that.

Well it really doesn't matter if you are all sick I guess.

I would put schools up there with hospitals... how many parents send their kids to school because they can not get a baby-sitter.

Yeah, hospitals are very understaffed generally. I suppose that's why they make such a big deal out of it?

Especially this time of year. Winter is usually the busiest time of the year. Unfortunately...it's when most hospital workers get sick as well.

Now say if my flu test came back positive and I called the employee health department at work...they would have told me I can't return to work for so many days and I would have likely had to have been cleared by them to return(you have to be free from fever for a certain amount of time iirc). Sad that this am I was kinda wishing I had the flu...so I would be more "justified" in calling in if I was still sick next time I had to work.

Certain things they will absolutely not let us come to work with though. Lice and pink eye are some examples. You can't return for like 48 hours if you have something like that(and have to show proof of treatment).

Exactly.

Also with most schools being very understaffed, teachers are forced to come to work even when sick I would imagine.

You bring up a good point.

How many workplaces are understanding when an employee has to call in not because they are sick....but their child is and they need to stay home to care for them?

Nope. Our bosses send us home if we come in sick and tell us to stay out until we feel better.

Wow. That's the first time I've ever heard anyone say they were hoping to test positive for the flu.

It makes absolute sense though in the context.

Because I got shite to do and it isn't going to get done if I'm not there to do it.

Not enough. I think employers should just give everyone a set number of days to take off without designating it as sick/vacation time.
Just give them the time and when it's over its over.

Only problem with the OP's premise is that the sick person was the most contagious THE DAY BEFORE they began to show active symptoms. Should they try and predict when they will be sick?

Sick days are for p******. Be a man and come to work.

I go to work sick, but I go out to meet people. I don't work in a stuffy office where I'm around people constantly. I Use hand sanitizer too.

I'm usually alone 50-60% of my day though.

Mine will tell you to do what you need to do, then trash the shite out of you to HIS boss. Seen him do it multiple times. He's also one of those guys who comes to work sick, coughs all over everything and wants to shake everyone's hand.

I was not allowed to miss school unless I had a high fever or a horse show I could have been puking my guts out and no still made me go.

Generally, I save my sick days for horse shows now, too. Just works out that some Typhoid Mary resident happened to infect us all at the same time.

I had a boss years ago who was like that. So glad I'm not working for that a-hole anymore.

I get it, people call in sick sometimes even when we're more tired than sick. We all have abused that at one time. Some are worse than others. But damnit, we're human! We get sick legitimately. And dare I say, sometimes we're not sick but wouldn't be worth a damn at work.
