Do people actually get money from gofundme? Doesn't the website take a chunk of the donations?

Sure guy, your family have no clothes, no food, no form of communication, no vehicles, have to get to work, and have no idea when they will be able to get their home repaired.

Just like the thousands of others in the same exact situation except 90% don't have flood insurance. Tell me this, if there hadn't been a flood would they have been able to feed their family this week? You make it seem as though they have zero dollars to their name and no source of income. They OWN A HOUSE and have flood insurance. Do they have good enough credit to get a home loan but not high enough to own a credit card? And how does not knowing when their home will get repaired (which will be paid for by the aforementioned flood insurance) have any relevance? Everyone is in the same boat - minus the flood insurance which immediately makes them more fortunate than most.

I havent seen any of these GoFundMe pages started by the homeowners themselves. All I've seen is friends of the homeowners starting the GFM page. I dont see anything wrong with personally. A lot of people lost a lot of stuff and are at a point where they have to swallow their pride and allow people to help them.

No, they are not.

Some people are willing to help, some are not.

You seem to fall in the latter. These folks only asked for a 1000 dollars from people willing to help. Not everyone has a credit card with a limit that can immediately restore food, transportation, clothes and shelter for an undetermined amount of time.

You're right. 90% don't have flood insurance. These people do.

I've been helping at Old Towne at Millcreek in Lafayette since it started. I'll be helping in a town home in the Plantation apartments tomorrow afternoon. On Sunday morning I bought the mops, buckets, gallons of bleach, and trash bags that I previously mentioned. On Monday we dropped off lunch to whomever wanted it (it was pizza hut).

You still didn't answer the question. Would they have been able to afford food and mortgage payments this month if there was no flood? They own a home, HAVE FLOOD INSURANCE, own cars (which means car insurance), and they have jobs. They have a source of income and obviously have credit given all their possessions. Are you saying their bank account literally had zero dollars in it and they have no credit cards whatsoever?

Regardless of who starts it, there is likely going to be more financial help for people who need the least financial help. If you're upper middle class, you likely associate with more upper middle class folks, and those folks have more disposable income to help in these situations. There is nothing wrong with that, and I don't really expect people to turn down help from those who want to donate, but I wish they could/would use that leverage to get the money to people who are significantly less fortunate. People want to help more when they have a personal connection with the people affected, and it would be great to see people use those connections to raise money for flood victims that don't have the same kind of network.

In your Universe one hundred percent of the Louisiana population was affected by this disaster.

This a reply to no one in particular, I just clicked reply on the OP.

There's a lot of MFers in this thread bickering back and forth about what is and what is not the proper way to help or to ask for help.

Look folks, let's leave the judgment for a couple weeks from now. How bout for now, we all just STFU and find someway, somehow to someone who NEEDS some help.

I'm sure most of these people don't have Internet service hence their friends do it for them.

When we flooded here in SC, a guy I went to college with had a GoFundMe, he literally lived in a 800k house in a flood plain. His parents are loaded. I couldn't believe people that I knew were giving him money. He is now rebuilding his house and it's unbelievable. Think they raised like 25k, which will nicely furnish his game room.
