are there really so many transgenders clamoring to serve in the military that this is what folks in D.C. are focusing on? IMO the top military brass should be the ones making this decision not civilians who are just pandering.

What makes me shake my head is that there are studies that show that transgender persons may be psychologically imbalanced. Do we really want that in our armed forces? I'm all for anyone who wants to serve, but not persons who may be cray cray and have obvious sex identification issues.

People got pissed off because we ended Don't Ask Don't Tell. It had no effect on the military, and people got over it.
The same thing will happen with trans people serving. In 10 years, people will look back on this and wonder what the big deal was.

I'm wondering if the trans individuals will have a completely different set of physical standards they must meet. The standards for men and women are vastly different.

I'm going out on a limb here and say, that sometimes it's not about what makes you feel comfortable. Sometimes you have to wonder if those with vaginas want your penis in their area regardless of what you feel. Sometimes those with penises don't want vaginas hanging around with them. Because even though you might feel like god, nature, etc. made a mistake with you, there wasn't a mistake made with those around you and they might also need some consideration.
Don't ask, don't tell didn't put gender issues into question. Penises still showered with penises. Transgenders puts gender into question and penises start showering with vaginas. And while the person in question may feel more comfortable that way, those around them will not. Sometimes you have to consider the 99.95% and not expect that 99.95% to accommodate the .05%.
But what do I know, I have a vagina and I'm pretty comfortable with it.
