In 20 years when that kid is looking for a job, if his mother never took down the pictures she posted of him.. Do you want a potential boss to google and be able to see you the shower with your dad, standing right under his balls or something?

Because everyone posts that on their FB feed!!!

I don't believe you.

The gun questions were added. Over my years many questions get added and taken away. Feel safe at home? Travel out of country? TB questions? These questions go away.

I can't see a doc pressing forward with the "you look like a gun owner"?

Sounds like an immediate foot in mouth

This was when we lived in Asheville. Things are different there to say the least.

My response would be:

"I pay you to tell me about my son's physical health. You focus on that and I'll take care of his everyday safety and everything else."

Can't argue with that.

I'm on the fence with this issue. On one hand, as a physician I'm a patient advocate. On the other, personally I'm a hunter, NRA member, libertarian, and i used to be a gun owner until they all sank in that unfortunate boating accident.

I don't have to really deal with it in practice now because I'm not in primary care. Back in my peds rotations, I was careful to be as unintrusive as possible. I never asked if parents owned guns. Instead I used hypotheticals: "If you have guns in the house, please make sure they are safely stowed. It's absolutely heartbreaking when we see these kids suffer a tragedy that is mostly avoidable."

And I'd combine the spiel with less polarizing topics: "Same thing for pools. If you have or live near a pool, please make sure its gates and doors are child proofed."

I never had a single problem with any parents addressing the topics in that manner.

I would make up the stupidest bs responses in a doctor asked me those questions.

Doc: "What are you posting on Facebook?"
Me: "mostly pictures of women in wigs"

Doc: "Do you own any guns?"
Me: "Well... ye-NO. No. Not really, no. Well, define 'guns' (using air quotes)"

It's none of the doctors' business. However...

It's true that some parents are reckless and inconsiderate about permanently publishing a child's images, hobbies, accolades, location, life plans etc. to the world.

We went to a school event recently and a lot of parents witnessed every moment through a frickin smartphone screen just so they could post pics later. It's kinda sad.
