Pebble Beach, CA Advice

Looking to setup a family vacation to Pebble Beach for my dad's birthday next year. Would be 8 people going, all adults. 4 of us would golf and the others wouldn't. Probably do one round at Pebble Beach and the another at Spy Glass. Any suggestions on how to go about booking other than through Pebble Beach's website. Since they don't post prices I assume it's going to be a lot ($800/night).
Also, can you play at Pebble Beach and Spy Glass without staying at one of the hotels? Seems like airbnb.com has some decent stuff nearby that isn't nearly as much per night.

You could just get a place or hotel in Monterey or Carmel.. They're pretty close

You can definitely stay at places cheaper than those on the courses. If you do that, the difficulty would probably be getting tee times. I would either call or email them for suggestions.

Just go about 15 miles on 17 mile drive and your there!!

I would stay in downtown Monterey or Carmel-by-the-sea are both nice little towns to stay at, so I'd stay there. Monterey is has more of a (dense) downtown and places to walk to. Carmel has more of a village feel with a artsy little downtown. Monterey Bay is one of the nicest areas in the entire country.
Of course if your dad can walk around and hasn't been to San Francisco then it's worth the 2 hour drive to check that out. Big Sur isn't far away, either.

It used to be that in order to set a tee time at Pebble in advance, you had to be staying at either the pebble beach lodge or the Spanish bay inn. Spyglass is part of those three, too.
You could only set a tee time something like one day in advance if you weren't staying at one of the pebble beach properties. Plus, you'd pay more for the round, like $100 more a round.

you can play it without staying there, and it won't be 800 a night. Granted, I am speaking from experience 15 years ago, so there's that...
also check out laguna seca, especially if they are doing a vintage car race and auction. too fricking cool.

I have been lucky enough to take several trips out there and believe it's more than worth it to stay at the resort!! Both the Lodge and Spanish Bay usually run some sort of stay and play package which includes a round at Pebble and Spyglass.
We stay at the Inn at Spanish Bay and the hotel experience is almost as amazing as the golf! Shuttle service all over the 17 mile drive, 8 or 9 restaurants, multiple bars, fire pits looking over the ocean, bagpiper at sunset, etc.
Definitely worth looking in to

Going in July with 3 other couples. To be able to play at Pebble for $495.00/player, you have to rent a room from their resort and cost is about $900/night. We are staying two nights and playing Spyglass the next day. You don't have to stay on the grounds to play Spyglass or Spanish Bay. You also will have other incidentals like caddy fees, etc.

Thi Inn at Spanish Bay is the answer. Stayed there a few years ago and it's amazing. Awesome views, great food and was my favorite golf course. We played Pebble and Spyglass as well. I would play Pebble just because and Spanish Bay.

It's hard to beat Pebble in July!!! if you don't mind going in the off season it gets a little more affordable.
We go every other year in early March and pay about the same for the hotel but get the golf at Pebble and Spyglass for free. This year they gave us a third night for half off and another free round at Spanish Bay.
If you do go in the off season, make sure and ask them when they are going to punch the greens. We learned that the hard way!!

You can play Pebble without staying onsite. I did it back in August. You can only book a tee time 1 day in advance though and if you have more than 1-2 people, there's a good chance you won't be able to get on.
If you're a large group and you HAVE to play Pebble, you should stay onsite. If you don't have to play Pebble, or have 1-2 people, you can stay offsite and just call the day before...and hope.

I know you have to stay on site to play Pebble in July. This is their peak season and the rep I worked with at the resort was nice about it, but said we had to stay to play Pebble.
