I've heard that hurricanes normally weaken in the gulf due to the shallow water(shelf) before they hit land(no idea if true). If that's the case I guess this one will hit at full strength due to no shelf there?

My cousin just texted me that him and his girlfriend were scheduled to depart today but are stuck in Puerto Vallarta until this passes. They arrived on Monday and are currently being evacuated to an evac center behind their hotel (Hilton Puerto Vallarta). Scary stuff.

Your cousin is about to be in the dead center of a full-on natural disaster in a third world country. He needs to drop some cash and get the hell inland as quickly as possible.

Mexico is an NIC, not a third world country.

I couldn't think of a much worse situation for them.... Being stuck in Mexico with a Cat 5 hurricane about to hit.... God bless 'em, I hope they're safe.....

I guess tourist in New Orleans during Katrina kind of felt the same way....

For real. Net jets, anything to get out of there. Dude is a tourist in Mexico, cut off from his support network, and has limited access to resources. This area is susceptible to landslides. Roads could be shut down for days or weeks.

Take a look at where the "evacuation center behind the Hilton" is in PV:

Hurricane Camille wiped city blocks off the map. This one is stronger and will plow through shitty Mexican construction. Long story short, GTFO while you still can before experiencing what is about to happen there.

That would be so f'n scary. I don't know what the hell I'd do. Probably not that easy to charter a flight out of there at a time like this.

That's way too close to the water. They need to get to higher ground.

The wind field is really narrow. If it misses you by 50 miles, it won't be that bad. 10 miles away and it's total devistation.

Hopefully she doesn't make landfall at high tide. That would be even worse than it's already going to be. At this point I'm not sure if it would even matter though - shite is going to get wrecked there.

So are you calling your cousin? Because "the evacuation center behind the PV Hilton" is about 400 yards from the shore and could be swallowed in storm surge.
