every job I do now requires structural calculations to accompany steel shop drawings, no matter how small the job is... it’s just hard to imagine today you could have a design flaw of this magnitude and not have someone catch it (assuming it is a design issue... construction, like life, is never black and white).

3" 16 gage composite deck can support 100-psf live load up to 14-ft span (published SDI catalog value). If you run the numbers with the deck properties, you start having shoring, reinforcement, and load issues over 20-ft.

My thoughts exactly. How did they get the deflection to work even assuming it was shored properly?

I have a feeling someone's stamped calcs are going to see a courtroom here.

Another thing looking at those pics... that SDI table is for VLI composite deck (which is called out on the drawings). Maybe my eyes are that bad but that doesn't look like composite decking which should have notching on the ribs... The regular conform deck is not near as strong.

You're right... it could be designed as composite beams based on seeing those additional pictures with all of that additional reinforcing. There are obviously additional concrete details not shown on those permit drawings.
absolutely I just don't want this tread to go down the wrong path. There could be one note on the concrete notes that give clarity.....maybe not. There could be a change order to do to a reinforced slab. People are just picking at straws right now.

All of those drawings are marked as 6/8/18. A new set of mech/plumbing/arch/elec were added with a 5/1/19 date. No structural with the 5/1/19.

Note 12 talks about TS reinforcement in slabs. But still not very clear.

Strange. There has been talk of a rooftop pool and I don't see it anywhere. I see plans submitted in May that show removal of the pool on the 8th and 14th floors.

Check out my post above about the VLI deck which it calls out on the drawings which is a composite deck (for the laymen, the deck can act as additional reinforcement). To me... That deck in the pics doesn't look like VLI deck and is just form deck. I've had that happen a couple of time where we designed the deck as a composite deck and the contractor bought regular deck. Fortunately it was caught before they installed it. Not that it mattered because I overdesigned that chit anyways.

A lot of smart people here. My question is how long will the investigation go and will they do a complete tear down and how long before local commerce re opens? Lots of events coming up from November to June. Need to open up canal ASAP

As long as designers are designing and contractors are building, I’ll always have job security. It’s life and people frick up. Construction litigation is expensive and this one will have multiple coverage counsel due to the huge insurance liability. We won’t know the outcome of this thing for 7 to 10 years and $10s of millions in attorneys fees.

Better speculation is what happens to the building.

Besides structural integrity questions, I don't see how this thing is going to be allowed to move forward or backwards until all parties are compensated.

This. This whole CF is why I make sure I am no where close to Mn, Vn, l/360, use Sxx rather than Zxx, and oversize everything.

If it is close I go up at least 2 sections so I can sleep at night.

Judge will have to weigh the spoliation of evidence vs public safety. I’d venture to say, we’re talking at least couple months if not a little longer.

I haven’t gone back through the thread but here is the pool from WWL.

Which could have been mistaken for a dumpster, I guess . If that theory is still being thrown around.

Is the composite decks being discussed is that Versa Floor?
