Was told today that, in addition to academic scholarships that offset TOPS, USM is waiving out of state tuition for LA kids to attend.

Can anyone confirm? makes it much more attractive

Also, how are they liking it

But they sure do keep raising the price for the in state tuition and a lot more online classes. Professor quality is dropping rapidly, would not recommend to any high school senior as I’m a senior at USM this year. Was good the first two years, past two have been very rapidly declining and it’s not looking bright

Correct if I’m wrong but isn’t USM a big commuter school?

How much is tuition there? OOS?

My son went into their stadium a couple of weeks ago and thought it was cool. Hattiesburg seems like a cool little college town. We travel there a good bit for soccer.

Commute from where? There’s literally nothing around there.

That’s awesome.

That would be a really fun school to go to

They didn't this current semester. I can tell you that if your kid wants to study a program that is not offered in Louisiana, you will pay in state tuition rate.

My kid loves it.

Laurel
Wiggins
Poplarville
Magee
Jackson
Gulfport

No saying all of these cities are close enough to it but it wouldn’t be unreasonable to commute for two classes a week

Correct, lots of commuters from nearby towns etc, and in addition lots of the kids that "live" there go home for the weekend...ghost town on the weekends as far as students are concerned...or at least it was in the early 90's, loved my time there, it was the perfect fit for me

Thinking of taking my son up there for soccer practice a couple/few times a week...that’s a S ton of driving, but I’ll do it for him if he wants.

this was the case 30 years ago anyway, some type of co-op that several states were in, if you wanted to major in Basket Weaving and USM had a program in it, but none of the schools in your home state did you could go and only have to pay in-state tuition, easily and frequently abused

Still the case, I should have said CAN instead of CANT.

Which is exactly why its a commuter school....

I live in Oak Grove just west of Hattiesburg. There isnt anything to do, so a large portion of students stay at home in the surrounding areas and commute

Meh. There really isnt shite to do around here. My brothers graduated from southern in the early 2000s. I hung out with them a lot at the Sigma Chi house and that was always a good time. I guess thats really all college kids are looking to do though really . As long as they have a place to drink, all is well. But outside of that, you're SOL.

My friend commuted from Chalmette twice a week! Maybe he was studying something that wasn’t offered in Louisiana, but I know he didn’t pay out if state then

i live in oak grove as well. went to southern miss. there is plenty of shite to do. bars downtown and two breweries, keg and barrel, brewskys, mahogany, adult soccer, tennis, softball and ultimate frisbee leagues. gameday weekend isn't lsu or any SEC school but it's still a good time when allowed.

and no, it's not a ghost town on weekends.

Is this the school where the NOLA parents send their kids who should have gone to Southeastern or a trade school? The ones who couldn’t get into Bama or Ole Miss? Genuinely curious on why someone would pick this school besides an obscure major not offered in state.

McNeese does this for Texas as well. Pretty common and a nice move in my eyes. Definitely take advantage of it if you are able.
