We used to throw rocks as wasp nest for fun, bottle rocket wars, bb gun wars, had monster dirt dub (sometimes rock wars )in construction sites for fun, (6 stitches on that one) had lawn darts, street skates, did evil knievel jumps with ramps etc. (Broken arm), etc etc. No one blamed parents for shite. We got home got on our bikes and took off. We would take 5 miles hike across town though woods etc to go to TG&Y and get a coke.
This "perfect helicopter parent" bullshite is raising the biggest bunch of self absorbed pussies in the history of mankind.
We all are fine.
I am worse of the lot with half a dozen concussions but I was wild as a march hare, still had enough brains left to get 3 degrees. U really dont use that much of your brain anyway. THE OT is proof of that.

Isn't this why those leash things exist?
Yes, and I have used them some as my daughter was a runner, but the looks people give you. (LOL) there is a modern family show on this btw

I consider myself to be a great protective parent but you are correct accidents will happen. Since this Orlando incident is in the news I will give you a quick example of how fast bad things can happen. My daughter age 5 at the time was throwing rocks in a stream with her then 7 year old brother. They were standing on a little wooden bridge about 5 foot over the stream. Myself and my now ex wife were less than 10 feet away talking to relatives in a split second I turned to see the bottom of my daughter's shoes going over the bridge. I lunged for her and missed she landed in the stream head first barely missing a large rock at the bottom. I jump in after her hit an electric fence shock the shite out of myself. I pull her out she has a gash in her forehead and gets a black eye. I will never forget that. It happened that fast. Am I a terrible parent I don't believe so but what would have happened if she hit that big rock at the bottom? Sorry if I rambled but accidents especially with young kids happen

All parents have stories like that. I have a story very similar to the fireworks story someone told. Luckily, it ends much less tragically for most of us. Luckily. There but for the grace of God go I.

My son was at the ER so much we honestly expected DHS to come by but he was just a wild child too.
One time when he was 3 he riding a toy and threw himself to wall. got up laughed and then ran almost head first into the wall and almost knocked himself out laughing the whole time. Apparently just for fun.
I watched the whole thing. I grabbed up gave him a big hug, checked his head for a knot or blood and said "I guess u r going to be an LSU linebacker like your uncle." and don't ever do that again.

We stayed outside running the neighborhood from sunup to sundown, and my parents didn't always know where we were. Different times, I know. I guess I feel a bit sorry for kids today. I was far more protective of my kids than my parents were, poor kids.

Yes very thankful mine are almost all grown up now. My biggest fear now is them all driving. My youngest is 15 and itching to drive too. Funny my oldest son drives like a grandpa and my 17 year old daughter drives like a indy car driver. Guess we will see where he falls.

My point exactly why would somebody from Nebraska watching fireworks with son wading in 12 inches of water think his boy was at risk for being eaten by a damn alligator?
At the Grand Floridian? Hell I used to pull 4 footers out of the water when they grabbed by crab pots (With chicken) and hit them with a stick until they let go of the damn pot. (Which rarely ever worked) I could have been bitten or possibly drug in a hundred times. But I was told there had never been a gator attack in Mississippi and I was bigger them and I wanted my fricking carb trap back, and I knew they just wanted the chicken.
Used to fend off sharks with my fishing rod too when dragging a stringer of specks. They were getting my damn fish. (LOL)
It was fun to be bullet proof and indestructible.

I was babysitting other kids in my neighborhood at 12
My daughter got certified at 13 to babysit she thought it would be easy money. First she babysat two 8 year olds and came home and said this is easy money. Next babysitting job one sick 3 year old (friend of the family's kid) I got 3 calls that night, "Dad this kid won't shut up!". That was her last babysitting job

Yep that's how I grew up also. Once I threw a jar of jelly at a bunch of those beehives in the white boxes. I turn and haul arse I can hear the bees behind me buzzing. I make it home unskaved so I thought. This was early 80's and I had a shaggy full head of hair I hear the buzzing getting louder I reach into my hair and get the shite stung out of me.

I was cleaning the ivy off the side of a barn once when I was 11 years old and all of a sudden a bunch of somethings (bees, wasps, hornets?) were stinging me. I ran to a nearby horse water trough and jumped in to it to get away from them.
frick them.
frick them.

I burned the woods down twice. Practically a rite of passage in the eighties.

Done that only once.
Middle of an old soybean field we started a fire to warm up. Field was very dry. Next thing you know we got a 3 alarm fire, we tried to kill it with our jackets but that field went up in no time. I just remember running home and hearing the fire trucks screaming by the house. There were 3 of us and not one parent found out.

Before video games we threw rocks at wasp nest on second story. we hard to hit that high. If u hit them u won I guess. We would all haul arse and then see who got stung. Often it was the person who hit them and stopped to admire his handi-work. It was our version of dick measuring. We were all pre pub so it would not be much fun. The closer u were willing to stand the badder u were.
It was fun and we got rid of all the damn wasp nest.
and yes I got stung plenty but not as much as you would think

Oh I totally forgot this and we used to swim in this blue hole in baton rouge when I was 10-12 that was full of damn alligators. I mean full of them. Of course, we were not supposed too, no clue if we were trespassing or not but there was a rope swing there and was hot in the Summer in baton rouge.
I remember when u would climb up on the tree to swing down u would always check around to make sure no gators where u were jumping. I remember some getting real close one time but I would have rather then eaten by gators then being called a pussy all summer so I jumped anyway.
I guess if we had been eaten it would be our parents fault?

Hell no, but we spent many hours standing in front of them and daring eachother to do it.
