if you are single live in town. even if your job is out in the burbs.
a very small part of me can imagine living in the burbs, but it would have to be for a place like The Woodlands and i would need to have kids.

Midtown. Babgy/Gray St area has always suited me just fine.

Heights can be good due to proximity to center of Houston and older neighborhoods with houses that actually have character. My wife and I looked hard at the Heights, but we were about to have kids so we made the jump to the suburbs and Kingwood.
Heights is convenient, but houses will be on the smaller side, which isn't a big deal for two people. Heights also has a somewhat eclectic mix of folks. Some older, some liberal, some Hispanic in fringe areas, and some younger people as well. There are some older neighborhood restaurants that defy the tired suburban chains. I love the Heights for the location and for houses with some character.
Just depends on what suits you two as a couple.

But you'll also pay $500k for a house with remotely modern amenities and it will be around 1,500 sq ft. Not that there's anything wrong with that for a young couple in their 20's (that is living in an older, small house).
Houston just doesn't have a "perfect" place to live for everyone. I think it's highly individual and you will always have some sacrifice. That is unless you have a crap ton of money.

live in Cinco too. Not where you wanna be if you wanna be close to the Houston center
I do too. It's great. OP said single and no kids. And a $3000 rental budget? Don't come to Cinco.
Get your arse to midtown heights or downtown.

Thanks for all the great feedback everyone. All great ideas and great things to know. I'm thinking we're on the right track too. We'll need to make friends and want to have fun so the heights or Montrose sound like the place to be for the moment, but the fact is that we will be trying for a family within a year, so the burb comments are great to know as well.
Thanks again

How old are you. Just because you have kids doesn't mean you are ready for Houston burbs.
If you are 25 and married? I'd stay in houston WITH the kid.
the land of 30somethings and 40 somethings await you out here.
In 5 years when you are worried about school districts, we are still out here.
