but BHM what does it say to people when they're at the bar tonight where this happened? It says get drunk and drive bc worst case is you spend 1 week a year in jail. If they had it in the back of their heads that if they got drunk and drove that we would amputate their leg, would they still get behind the wheel of a car drunk?

Again I hate saudi arabia in every way imaginable as a nation, but when it comes to justice and punishing those who commit crimes like theft and murder, their barbaric punishments seem to have made alot of people think twice before committing crimes.

As someone stated earlier, a DUI is a badge of honor in this country, its cool to drink and drive, we have to make it a huge crime to drink and drive not a simple $10,000 DUI fine and you move on with your life. Again nobody in here really cares until one of their loved ones is killed by one of these savages and then they'll change their tune.

It's amazing how little time people who kill others in their vehicles while under the influence do, in jail, if that.

Yep. I think anyone driving drunk and injuring another person should be charged with attempted murder. You get behind the wheel of a vehicle while impaired seems premeditated to me.

I think you get any kind of DUI, 1 year in jail, no other option, and a stiff fine.

And yes, distracted driving can cause the same accidents and should be charged similar.

He should be in jail for the rest of his life. He committed murder. Drunk driving sentences are way too lax in this country.

What if has been mentioned, alcohol actually played no factor in her death? Assume he was traveling down a road in control of the car within the posted speed limit, and she not checking for oncoming traffic steps out in front of him, the outcome would have been identical for a driver that had not been drinking. Un-avoidable accident for both drivers, should one get life in prison, and the other a pass?

For alcohol not to play a factor, the person operating the vehicle wouldn't be drinking. There is no excuse for drinking and driving.

If you want to drink, don't drive or operate a vehicle. Why is that so hard for people to grasp?

Our punishment system is very fricked up.

That being said... if this guy is a moral human, then he'll carry this with him for the rest of his life. I cannot fathom how I'd deal with having killed someone while drunk driving.

There is no excuse for drinking and driving, but that still doesn't answer the question of what factor did alcohol play in her death if she would be just has dead if she had stepped in front of a car driven by a sober driver. Why should he be punished for anything other than DUI if he in no way contributed to her death?

Not arguing your point and I completely understand it.

Discussing the dangers of drinking and driving is one of the best ways to educate people. This particular punishment certainly has people discussing it which is why I like the sentence. Like I said, I would have preferred one week per year for life however.

Putting him in jail for life would have ended most conversations about his actions. This way, at least once a year people will ask...

Where is John.
Oh, he is spending his week in jail.
Jail for what?
He drove drunk one night and killed a lady.
OMG, that is terrible.
People need to not drink and drive.

I do not think every DWI death should have this sentence. I just like the fact that is has people talking about this subject even more. In fact, I think for your first dwi should carry the one week per year sentence. I like a stern punishment but I also like one that will have the best overall effect.
