the SO and I are going on our honeymoon to tuscany. i was looking into the vespa tour. had you ever ride a vespa before? neither of us have driven one and wondering how easy/difficult they are to handle on the roads there.

I had never been on one before. My wife did not want drive so she just rode with me and enjoyed the view while I drove. It was really easy, not one person in our 10 person group had trouble with it. Also the best pasta we ate on the whole trip was served to us when we stopped for lunch.

Also, my wife and I rented a car in Florence and drove all through the Tuscan countryside. It was beautiful and we stopped at several vineyards and ate the best food and drank unbelievably great wine that was cheap.

Catch a day train to Pisa and check out that tower before it falls. You may be thinking "what's the big deal?" but then you get there, and that thing is REALLY leaning.

Loved Florence and thought it was way better than Rome.

Check out the Chapel of the Princes,Mausoleum of the Medici Family. It was one of the coolest places in Florence from an art and history perspective.

Also really liked the Basilica of Santa Croce. Resting place of Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, Dante(funerary monument), Ghiberti plus many other great Italians. Really interesting to see the tombs of so many of history's great names in one place.

A must see. The stained glass behind the altar is amazing. Wife and I shared a bottle of wine on the steps in front of the church while the kids had a snack.

Florence >> Venice >> Rome

This is just freakin retarded. I'm in Rome this very minute and have been for the last week and a half and still have not seen everything. Florence is great but could be done just a day. I highly recommend staying in Rome and catching the high speed train to Florence for the day. Then hit Innsbruck and finally focus on Germany, the greatest vacation country in the world.

Not Florence - but if youre traveling around Italy:
a. Go to Lucca - great place. Hotel Alexander in the walled city
b. Podera Canapaccia in Montelcino -- nice small vineyard experience with really cool people. Great wine. The Brunello is super. The Grappa is dangerous! This place is real, you can even help with the work if you want -- not a packaged tourist place. Very Unique in a beautiful area south of Sienna
c. Try Trieste if you are interested in NE Italy. On the Adriatic near Slovenia. Interesting place with history and great bars/restuarants

Great thread.

We are doing a day in Venice followed by two in Florence. Well then head to Tuscany for five days at a B&B in Chianti and finish up with three days in Rome. All of this is at the end of the summer.

Il Duomo
Ponte Vecchio
Il Museo degli Uffizi
Il Mercato a San Lorenzo
Piazza della Signoria
Palazzo Vecchio

Those are some suggestions, I can't recommend any places to eat since I was only there for a couple days.

Too many days in Rome from what I've ever heard by any one who has ever been. Delegate 2/3 of those days to other locations so you aren't moving every 20 minutes to the next city. Unless you like that sort of thing, now you have more days to do whatever.

I lived in a suburb outside of Rome for almost 2 months. There is so much to do in Rome, 5 days isn't exactly crazy. I would definitely go to some of the smaller older cities in Tuscany, like Lucca, Siena, etc. mentioned above. If you know Italian, or you think you can get by, check out Sicily, seriously a hidden gem in my opinion.

If you want to do some hiking, it's a 6 hr train ride or so from Rome to Feltre and the Dolomite mountain range. Again, not many people visit there and it's awesome. I wouldn't waste time in Milan, but if again, if you think you have some time on hand, check out Cinque Terre.

I want to go back...

In a perfect world I'd do at least 5 days in every city, but when budgeting time you got to make the terrible sacrifice.

Part of my family is heading to Rome/Florence/Cinque Terre this summer.

I can't make it due to other trips abroad I'm taking. Will get there eventually.
