I haven't tackled this yet. Quite frankly hands frighten me.

Hands truly aren't an issue and you honestly don't need a press or a hand remover. The little push sticks for hands are find and the as long as you use some paper or plastic with a V (Bergeon makes them) and gently pry them up.

The easiest thing to ease the trepidation is get a cheap Seiko like a SNK800 series, I bet there is a youtube vid to walk you through that exact watch.

Overall it is pretty easy but I felt the same way until I did one.

1. start with a run down mainspring
2. set a day/date or date watch to midnight you don't have to worry about that if it is a no date
3. remove the case back
4. release and remove the winding stem
5. remove the movement fixing screws
6. flip the case over and the movement will slide out
7. remove the hands
8. remove the dial

reverse the process and use silicon lube on the gasket and a tiny dot on the crown threads

I test for waterproofing but I have a knock off of a Bergeon 5555. I dive so I test before taking any watch diving.

I remove most case backs with a sticky ball but have a Jaxa for stubborn ones and knock off case back dies for Rolex and Panerai, you can get the Breitling ones too.

The only thing I have to look up for a new to me movement is how to release the stem. They vary and some are specific in you don't want to rotate them more than X degrees.

Have some Dial Dots on hand those dial feet are often brittle and is the reason Dial Dots are a thing.

A set of Bergeon or similar (ie much cheaper) screwdrivers

A quality set of tweezers you can buy Bergeon, Dumont or Horotec but I have a very good set of Swiss made Ideal-Tec for about 1/4 of the price of Dumonts.

In the end just take a stab at it, that's what I did the first time. Once you have done that it is time to do the Watchtime.com online watch school. It is very well done $75 for each of the three levels plus tools and movements of course but there is nothing cooler for a watch geek than to actually disassemble and reassemble a movement.

To answer OP an automatic watch isn't going to keep good time. Not even a certified Chronometer. It's just the nature of the beast. If you are looking for accuracy but a Casio G-Shock.
I'm not solely interested in accuracy, but I was hoping to get a good sample size of entry level and higher end models to compare.

Tested my Seiko 5 sports twice this weekend. -35 s/d both times. Seiko 7S36 movement.

Put an Orient Mako on today. Expecting it to do a lot better than that.

Love the look of the orient mako. Might just pull the trigger on it. Had a seiko skx007 for about a year and have had no complaints.

I've found what works well for the Rolex-style cases are the self-adhesive disks for table or chair legs...the ones to prevent floor scratching...can get a pack for 2$ at any dollar store.

And my hack for re-applying hands is a ball of rodico on the tip of some pegwood.

But yeah, I've spent a retarded amount of money on tools over the years. Still don't have a crystal press, just a lift for acrylics.

Have a Rolex Daytona and Datejust. My Daytona is probably +5 seconds/day. Datejust is more like +20 to 25. Need to have it serviced ..

Casio waveceptor....downloads the time from the atomic clock everyday.....nothing else is more accurate.

Same. Solar powered atomic Casio G-shock. Gets the official time every day. Never needs a battery. Never needs adjusting.

I think it was 90 bucks and I love it.

Have a Citizen ECO drive that's almost as clever. But not quite.
