There's an interesting piece written by a guy who lived through the breakup of Yugoslavia that covers a lot of these issues. I'm too lazy to look for it again, but some of you have probably read it. Basically, you have to band together with other like minded people, preferably blood relatives. It doesn't matter how badass you are, or how well armed you are; if you're alone, you're outnumbered, and you have to sleep sometime.

Also, medical skills are a must, or knowing someone who does. And you need something you can trade. Alcohol and cigarettes are good. Other than that, keep your head down and don't draw attention to yourself. Again, no matter how badass you imagine yourself to be, there's always a bigger badass out there. You don't want him noticing you.

If the S ever does HTF, most preppers will find out they're not nearly as well prepared as they think they are.

This, between my immediate family, the extended family, and the neighbors that live around where I grew up we have a big chunk of good hunting land, and plenty of good creeks that hold bass and bream. Our bug out plan has been pretty ironed out for quite a few years.

Head out into the country/rural areas and start pillaging food and supplies.

No joke, this is one of my "just in case" plans. My family owns 1,500 acres of land, 900 is crop land and 600 is timber. There is one road in and out. 2 farm houses that are in good to decent living condition. My uncle, cousin, and neighboring farmers are excellents marksmen.
Yeah we got about 700 acres that my grandmother lives on and another 1,500 about 20 minutes away. She grows vegetables and a few other things. We've got a nice rifle selection and a few handguns.

Family has a small cabin on an island in the middle of a river - and it's hidden from view. That said, enough arms/ammo to last a while. Wouldn't be hard to fish and grow a garden, either. Since the current is pretty fast, it would be difficult to get there. In reality, who knows how long one could hold out in that situation. If the cabin was undiscovered, could one live out the rest of their lives in such a place? I don't see why not - the climate is nice and it doesn't get cold, so that's not a worry. Just upkeep and food - and a way to start a fire... Fishing wouldn't be hard and game is plentiful.

As long as the nightrunners don't cross over and the rogue bands stay away, all should be good.

Go back north to family land. Eat deer and trout everyday. Smoke a lot of pot.

That's an intriguing setup and potential storyline for a good movie.

However, I imagine that there will be a lot of traffic on the river after a catastrophe, people who own canoes who are desperate to relocate but too afraid to travel the highways.

Your family island would certainly be a stopping point for several boats, and some of those travelers may not be friendly.

What would you do if your island hideout was discovered? Would you be willing to permanently silence your foe?

I bet if you bought a 5 pack of Bic lighters and only used them to start a fire or two each day that would last you like 10 years.

A few magnesium fire starter sticks will allow you to start hundreds of fires.

No need to liquid fire starter.
