What is your plan in this scenario? Are you a friend or foe of "The Island"?

so this thread started out kinda cool. Now I feel like I'm in the midst of a play by play version of OT survival Dungeons and Dragons.

A think a lot of people seem to forget that you can survive well without growing food. How do you think the great trappers and explorers of this country survived their expeditions?
true, there's millions of wild hogs running around in the southern U.S. supposedly. guess you could trap/shoot those

I could sell you guns or child soldiers to destroy their island clan if you are so inclined.

He wants to be in with the survivors, not with those looking over their shoulders every minute.

Between Kings and merchants, I'd rather be the King.

What's the shelf life on that?
Most of it is 20-30 years. We should own stock in Mountain House.

Killz's storyline for a movie kind of set the ball rolling that developed into its own story adventure. However, you must not want to be on our island...
Creative thinking/brainstorming helps groups identify potential issues that may not be obvious at first.

Exactly. And smugglers are at the top of the do not trust list.
So, Killz, here is the plan: With the fact that in such desperate times, the sheep will follow the strong. We could spread our influence out from the island to where the locals would depend on us. That way, they would warn us of impending trouble - kind of like the jing bao system of the Chinese used to warn the Flying Tigers of approaching Japanese aircraft. Eyes and ears. Nobody would even get close without us knowing. If needed, we could fall back to our easily defensible island and repel any attack.
Therefore, survival would be ensured. I mentioned the island being in a southern state - it is and the weather is mild during the winter, so cold is not an issue. Of course, the things that come with warm weather would. But, people have been living like that for eons - which seems to be forgotten in this thread.
Trapping/hunting/fishing would be the easiest part which would allow survival until crops can take hold. I am not worried about survival.

If it was me, I'd set up an arrangement with GT23. Basically, your island becomes a modern-day Port Royal or Tortuga. He supplies what you need, in return he gets a safe haven for R&R.

We tried, but he went apeshit on us just because the simple question of signals was asked. After all, it would be bad for business to find one's self nailed to a tree, wouldn't it?

I missed (glazed over) the whole signal thing. He needs to come to terms with the fact he'll need a place to get stupid drunk/stoned and enjoy his pirate lasses without having to look over his shoulder.

Move to the lake house and live off the land.

All I said was that I didn't want to discuss the signal plan on TD. These guys are paranoid. Tell you what, the password will be LSU if approaching from the west, Mizzou sucks arse sweat if approaching from the east.

Excellent write-up.
I imagine it would be about a week - maybe less - before chaos unfolded.
It would definitely be a wise idea to get away from population centers - as the looters would become killers at the drop of the hat. Which is one reason why I said I would go to the island - it is far enough from any population to be forgotten. There is a small community there - but think almost fishcamp like. My uncle, who lives in the community, also owns the island (passed down for generations). The locals are a tight knit group and supportive of each other. Also, there are only two roads into the area, which makes some kind of early warning very feasible.
Getting there may be another story, though. It is roughly six or seven hours from my house, which may get a little hairy.
But, back to the island and its surrounding area. Almost all of the locals have some sort of garden/crops, so they are well versed in that area. The island is a fair bit from them, but one has to go through the locals area just to get to the river. The climate is very mild in winter (although hot, of course, in the summer) and very good for growing. Fishing year round, etc.
I think the hardest part would be getting there and setting up things. It shouldn't be too hard as long as medicine and the like isn't needed. Then trips to the nearest pharmacy or whatever (if not already looted) would be in order. But, one has to think like the early settlers. Would it tough? Yes and that is an understatement, but it doesn't mean certain death, either.
