OT Student Loan Non-Democratic Thread

So I'm browsing the net and I come across this article:
LINK
And as an avid reader of all of the TOPS threads.....I still wonder: When was the decision to go to college changed from being a privilege, to being a right?
Attending college is a choice. Plain and simple. You CHOOSE to take on debt, to educate yourself, to get a better job, to make more money.
Am I missing something?
This pathetic view that going to school is a right and should be paid for by anyone other than yourself is a joke. I can not understand this thought process.

Yeah but isn't it the government's responsibility to adequately educate it's people? Otherwise we end up with a nation of fricktards, right?

The government educates people for 13 years and most still come out half retarded. Another four years won't help.

Or you could just work and pay cash to go to school. La public colleges aren't that expensive. I did it.

In the land of the blind a one eyed man is king.

College became a big thing when free trade encouraged companies to offshore what used to be good jobs. Union busting also contributed to the loss of decent blue collar jobs. So college became important.
TOPS was started by a man who had the personal belief that all Louisiana students should have the opportunity to go to college, and that Louisiana's brain drain was bad for the state. Don't blame TOPS Bc the legislature is too retarded to manage it's budget, legalize pot, and amend the state constitution.

Without TOPS, tuition at ULL and LSU is around $5000 a semester. Add in books which could be 200-600 ish, rent anywhere from 3-4000, food, gas, misc and you're talking $10,000 a semester. Most kids can't afford $10,000 a semester on their own unless they're selling coke or working at a strip club.

You're on the wrong board, OP.
Republicans on this site gladly took that TOPs handout without qualms.

Think about this for a second. Our state is having trouble paying for TOPs, which by no means covers the full cost of attendance. There is outcry on a national level about loan forgiveness. How in the hell would we ever be able to afford that on a national scale? What about all the people that paid or their debt or didn't accrue any debt to begin with? There is a problem with the cost of higher education, but forgiving loan debt does not solve the root of the problem, only a symptom of the problem.

Your parents would pay for your college if they loved you enough

Maybe I'm reading what you're saying incorrectly, but I am not advocating loan forgiveness.

I said it before and I will say it again, the money we waste on foreign countries that hate us could be better served reinvesting in our own damn countrymen that want to better themselves.

If your mom keeps loving me right, she'll pay for both of our loans.

We really need to place an emphasis on trade and vocational schools. We are going to hit a point where no one has the skills to do this kind of work and we will be up a creek.
