Take your work stuff off your phone.

well the down side of that is you actually have to go to work everyday. If I have something else to do I can still work and never see my office. I'll go to Florida for a week and not use vacation time cause I spend 2-3 hours a day working

You will quickly burn out if you did this all the time. The really bad stuff does linger in your head after you leave work. But you learn to decompress from it and move on.

Yep. I very rarely think about work when I'm off.

I kept my personal phone specifically for this reason. I can leave my work phone at home.

I have a hard time disconnecting on the weekends and vacations. I check my phone frequently and respond to emails over the weekend. Heck, I'm usually the one instigating them. I'm almost always thinking about work and get worked up about work issues even when I'm not physically there.

I'm beginning to think I have a problem. So what better place to come than the omniscient OT.

Money doesn't sleep. Neither should your phone.

I have no work e-mail on my phone. I can go through a site to check it if there is something important I'm looking for, but nothing will pop up. If something really important happens they can call me, but that rarely is an issue.

95% of my interaction with co-workers outside of work is my boss asking me what's on the smoker or sharing pictures of whatever he's cooking.

So... yes, I easily disconnect from work.

We operate 24/7 365(oil and gas) so I don't really have a choice, but my job isn't all bad

Does anyone in this thread have have to carry two cellphones frequently. How terrible and inconvenient is that?

I do. It helps that I only use my work phone for work. I don't have any personal apps on it. It sucks having to carry two phones, but like I said, when I want to leave it at home I can

I have worked places where I struggled to not let work bleed into my personal life. In my profession there is no way to "turn it off," I bring home work all the time and am available nights and weekends by email/phone. I usually work 830ish to 630ish.

But, I like my current firm and it's easy enough to not let it impact the rest of my life most of the time. But then, I don't struggle with anxiety and purposefully refuse to allow my career to become my main focus in life. It's a job that I enjoy, take seriously, but which exists solely to allow me to do the things I actually care about.

I normally check out of work before getting to my car and don't think about it until I've sat in my chair for 5 minutes in the morning.

When I leave I work I never think about it or do anything work related. I disconnect every day and every weekend. I even stopped going to work happy hours. I only go to my wife's work happy hours. My job is not my life.

We have today off for July 4th. I was up at 5:15 and tried to get a quick workout in. The workout was interrupted by a phone call with a problem on a rig. I got that figured out and finished the workout. Went reports and sent out my morning report which I do everyday regardless of holiday, weekend or even if I'm on "vacation". I also had two conference calls with drilling engineers about the problems we had this morning. 24/7 365 and I would rather it that way than to put the responsibility in someone else's hands and they frick it all up.

I am going play golf this afternoon though so I would say I can disconnect pretty well

Barring rare traumatic events, I leave everything in my office when I'm off from work and rarely think about work issues at home. I'm unusual (lucky) though, I think more career folks are like the OP.

Plus I work in a clinic so it's not like I can make any more or any less money by working at home. I have a flat salary.

Gotta take care of yourself when you're on your own time or eventually your work will suffer.
