OP this is what your tube drain looks like. If you keep hammering you will get through the drain shoe. But I don’t think you will like the outcome. If you are trying to unstop a tube you should take the cover off the overflow and go through there.

You're going to need some pliers and some 30 weight ball bearings. It sounds like it's your Fetzer Valve. You should also have some 3 in One oil on hand and some Gauze Pads. In case you need it about 10 quarts of anti freeze, preferably Prestone!

What are the chances OP returns to this thread if it's an Elbow?

Aboveare the (3) ways a tub will be connected. most common is the "indirect configuration"
snaking this short radius fitting (which will also have the stopper hardware) is not easy to do

That would be the good ole cum ball drain stop. Get your teenage son to fix it.

My vote is that the plunger came loose and is now blocking the drain.

#1. The screwdriver is just a horrible idea.
#2. You clearly need to call a plumber.

Did you take a flashlight and look down there?

If your tub is set up like this...
In all likelihood your chain has either rotated or rusted off to allow the plunger to remain in a down position. You better hope it is the rotation.
Take off the trip lever and there should be a turnbuckle style assembly that you can adjust. The trick is finding the happy zone. Where it will come up enough when set to drain, and not be too high when set to plug.
