AO Smith vs Rheem, which one is better? Need to replace my 22 years old State water heater.

Why not get another State?
The key to water heaters is draining/maintaining them to get good life out of them. Also look for one with a brass drain valve in lieu of plastic.
You are also going to get a thousand replies about swapping it out for a tankless.

Because I need one today and those are the ones the big box stores carry.

If they are different, go with the better warranty.

Ive had better luck with Rheem/Ruud. Probably won't find a residential with a brass drain unless you're talking 50 gallon, but it is good advice.

Wow, I would have bet money that Coburns or Southern Pipe would at leat be open until noon on Saturday but nope, closed.
And wonder why big box stores take their business.

I install quite a few of them. The Rheem seems to be better built and longer lasting imo

I never understood this either. I worked at a family owned hardware store back when I was a teen. We closed at noon on Sat. I asked the owner, a friend, "how come with Saturday being the day most people have time to go to a store?" He said "we like to have Sat. afternoons off also."
I said "well it's twelve o'clock somewhere, time to close up". He chuckled and told me to get my arse back to work.

Up vote for not calling it a "hot water heater", just so we don't have to read asinine replies.
To answer you, I doubt there is much difference in the water heaters, where prices are similar.
