Sorry. I was just connecting the dots that you might be in New Orleans since Northshore is part of your username and reading your posts on here I think we might know either each other or at least know some of the same people. Either way, SF!

this site needs a DM option. anyways, chances are you are probably right. i went to OCS in 07.

777, I think I whole-heartedly agree with all of your points. Just thought it sounded harsh to call his grandson a whiner (I saw you asked for a retraction) for thinking about getting out and looking at the airlines while talking up these other dudes who got out to work for the airlines. He didn't say anything about his grandson's future plans re follow-on Reserve gigs??

Hell, I didn't plan on joining the Reserves and they had to kick me out at 30!! All good bro!!

Depending on what language he speaks, he may be better off in the Air Force.
All services have enlisted linguist programs. Unless that's his passion I wouldnt recommend it over commissioning. Max AF language bonus is $1k/m. There are language programs for officers too. From what I've noticed Army may have more language slots for officers. I've known officers in USAF and Army get sent to Defense Language Institute but its typically for career broadening opportunities Maj or later. Not just obscure high demand low languages either. I know 2 that went for French both attaches though. One got Paris (AF) other spent years in Africa (Army).

Unless he is bringing a hard to find language, services will be more interested in aptitude to pick up new language as measured through DLAB test. AF just updated policy of paying for language proficiency for all to only designated career fields. AF.mil

what school is he at. If he is at a school with ROTC tell him to man up and go talk to the officers at the ROTC detachment about joining.

ASVAB is still waaay bigger than GPa if he's thinking about enlisting first then going OCS which, fwiw, is probably what he should do.

It honestly just sounds like you have an ax to grind against equal opportunity. Were you fricked over at some point in your life or something? The vast majority of the military is white heterosexual males. They're not disadvantaging themselves or each other.

How so? If commissioning is his objective enlisting first is probably the lowest likelihood of achieving his goal. If you're saying it will make him a better O I'd agree that some of the best of ones were prior E (but also a few of the absolute worst too). If it was my kid I'd give them same advice my enlisted father (E7 at the time) gave me "commission directly don't enlist first." There is just too much that can derail or delay career or life plans so take the most expedient path without unnecessary delay. The prior enlisted officer pay is nice and the experience and additional maturity can be a real advantage but not worth the risk of not being selected for OCS/OTS.

A sophomore in college should not enlist, however he’s not guaranteed shite so he may have to accept that and go enlisted. Especially when OP said he’s a bit of a slacker & gpa issues. Lots of ppl feel entitled, would make a great officer

He could always become a Warrant Officer. That’s the route I went, but I was Aviation in the Army. So it’s branch depending. In the Army, a degree is not required, but it certainly helps promotability later on. Food for thought.

And look, tbh, I wouldn’t steer anyone towards the military these days. Unless there’s no other option.
