Do you understand the point of a catalytic converter?

if the problem were fuel starvation, you would probably notice a slowing, or failure to accelerate, before it died. i have had two fuel pump failures and was able to slowly limp home both times. an abrupt dying sounds like it lost spark. each cylinder has a plug, coil, injector, so failure of one would make it run bad, not die. someone mentioned a crank sensor. that would do it.
eta: plugged catalytic converter acts very similar to fuel pump dying. will crank and run well at idle but wont accelerate.

Did we ever get a make/model and if it was throwing a code?

I've seen it mentioned twice already, but I'll reiterate a third. Replace the crankshaft sensor. Easy fix. Depending on make and model which you have yet to disclose, it's about 75-100 bucks.

The alternator could be overcharging the battery, causing the acid to boil and spill out of the vent. That explains the smell at least. Catalytic Converter makes sense too.
