The Great Stink
quote:

The Great Stink was an event in central London in July and August 1858 during which the hot weather exacerbated the smell of untreated human waste and industrial effluent that was present on the banks of the River Thames.

Could you imagine how bad sex must have smelled when people only bathed once or twice a year? I bet pushing your dick in was like pulling apart a grilled cheese sandwich.

Apparently Chicago was the first city to get what we think of as indoor plumbing..But the way they did it was pretty awesome

I believe they also change the flow of the chicago river to flow away from lake michigan because the sewage and slaughter houses were wrecking the lake. Where they got their drinking water.

Didn't Seattle do something similar? I remember hearing about Seattle Underground, I've never been before so I don't know for sure. they basically raised the street level the height of a 1 story building. I don't think they jacked up the buildings though. IIRC the first floor of buildings became the basement and the 2nd floor became the first floor and so on.

the first thing you’d notice is how everyone there stinks due to the fact it was common for people to only bathe like once or twice their entire life

It always tickles me how clean everyone looks in movies about the past, particularly medieval times and earlier.

If you really want to know just visit the west coast of Africa. Smells like someone dumped a million gallons of diarrhea on a landfill and let it bake in the hot sun.

York England has a long, long history. The city has a tourist attraction that goes down, into the city, and through layers of "civilizations". When you get down to the Viking occupation, the soil is especially brown black, and then the smell hits you. It's memorable and dense. (Probably enhanced for tourists and guaranteed cholera free.) It's the smell of York, then and they talk about it.

The city that gives the world York Minster, a magnificent cathedral, also features its dark side. And both are worth the visit.
