Just moved to Abilene, Texas and the 9 year old has the flu. We are not established with a pediatrician so we ended up at the walk-in clinic and left with a prescription for flu med. Question: How long can we keep giving him Tylenol and Motrin to control the 103 fever? As soon as the meds wear off the fever goes back up. The nurse at the clinic won't answer the phone and roads are closed ue to snow. Yes, he took his flu shot.

Call the nearest ER and ask your questions.

Rotate them on and off...he can have each one of them every 4 to 6. Start with Tylenol now. Motrin in 2 hours. Tylenol 2 later...

I am not a doctor. But I do play one on td.com

In all seriousness...hope he feels better. Keep the fluids down. Rest.

Alternate Tylenol and Advil every 3 hours around the clock. If fever continues after 3 days, I’d consider going back to dr, but the flu symptoms can last up to 2 weeks. If you caught it early, tamiflu should help soon though.

Seems like you were at the appropriate place already to ask this question.

ETA: Rotate the medications as others have suggested. This is what my wife did with our daughter when she was little.

Alternate the Tylenol and Motrin. As long as he’s drinking he should be fine. If he stops drinking or sleeping too much take him to an ER to get checked. Ask if the ER has “Physicians that that are Board Certified in Emergency Medicine”

Tylenol every 4 hours, Ibuprofen every 6 hours. As others have said alternate the 2. You can continue this throughout the duration of his illness without having to worry about it. Hydration is key. Keep in mind Tamiflu can make kids' nausea/vomiting worse. I'm personally not a huge fan of it, but it's the best we got. The flu sucks.

doesn't add up

Flu shot doesn’t protect against every flu strain
Flu shot takes 2 weeks to provide immunity so if you are exposed to flu in those 2 weeks you have no protection
Flu shot isn’t 100% effective but even if you still get flu....higher chance you have a less severe version of it than if you didn’t get flu shot

The only thing I will add to this is don’t try to give him a cold bath. That is an emergency solution because it is dangerous. If the fever breaks 104, contact a physician immediately. Otherwise, there is nothing wrong with lukewarm bathes and continuing Tylenol and Motrin. The meds can be given per bottles instructions for several days. Push fluids. Dehydration is a serious issue for kids. Good luck.

Oh yeah, Don’t bundle the kid up in 7 blankets.

Yeah I know it doesn't add up, I thought he had strep or something else but he tested positive for flu.

Tylenol and Motrin should only be given every 6 hours, and only at the appropriate, weight based doses for a child.

6 hrs is the usual rec, but you alternate them every 3 to get better fever coverage.

Weight based dosing is the appropriate method as well.

Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are both cleared from the body through different routes, liver and kidney respectively.

That is why you can alternate them without issue as long as you maintain the 6 hours between each dose.
