Most spider bites itself are actually not harmful, most spider lacked the amount of venom that could actually harm you. Also most spider's fangs are not sharp enough to penetrate through the skin to inject sufficient venom to cause tissue injury.

Thus, most common complications from a spider bite or any bug bite is secondary bacterial infections, usually it is the staph bacteria living on your skin that followed the bite or sting. Signs of a bacterial infection include swelling, tenderness, warmth, redness, and hardness (induration) around the site. If you have those symptoms, then you would need to see the doctor before the infection spread to deep.

A brown recluse spider does have enough venom to cause tissue damage, brown recluse venom is corrosive, that is how they eat. The spider catches it's prey, injected the venom, and wait for to venom to kill and dissolve the bug, then suck the bug like a milk shake. When the brown recluse injects its venom into us, the venom cause localized tissue destruction, the necrosis people are talking about.... the bigger the spider, the more potent the venom, the greater the necrosis. Symptoms include, tender, swelling, redness, induration, and at the bite site, the tissue/skin will start to die, turning black. The treatment is debridement, packing the wound site, and antibiotics.

tl;dr
bottom line, it could eventually kill you, go see a Doc, I almost died a few years ago because of being a macho he-man, thought I had the flu, diagnosis was sepsis, probable cause: spider bite

Would an optometrist be able to handle this?

I would strongly consider going to an emergent care center and letting them take a look. Insurance will cover the visit. Err on the side of caution.

Is that insurance?

Maybe you just got the premium collection plan?

wow, had to take the old lady to the er last weekend, decided to check out a walk in place, because of the inevitable wait at conventional er, got her in as soon as I gave them my ins. and debit cards, well-equipped place, they followed up the next day, $80, and I think I'll get some of that back

They won't start pumping you full of antibiotics unless they know for sure it was a brown recluse.

I've know three people that have been bitten and all required surgery and brief hospitalization.

If you have pain and it intensifies or start to run a fever, I wouldn't wait until tomorrow.

Ben try to keep an eye on it tonight. If redness continues to spread, pain or swelling increases go directly to an ER . Do not mess with this. As an RN, I have taken care of more than one spider bite that was just horrible (included multiple surgeries to remove dead tissue).

Please post back what meds you were given by urgent care. Am quite worried. Thanks

I've been bitten by one. They will know because a ring of inflammation will grow around the bite.It will be red and swollen and tender to the touch. The center will die. I had a nice chunk of meat cut out my leg to get rid of the dead tissue.
