So why if any reason would they take so long to treat the fracture with a cast or some other means? Any suggestions? TIA
And to let swelling go down. If you cast too early and it swells, you gotta cut if off. If it's broke, it'll still be broke Monday, but the main issue is to let the swelling abate. If it's a small avulsion (chip) fracture or just a hairline fracture, may just be able to splint. Or the doc don't fricking know and he's buying time.

She should soak it in shaved garlic, distilled water, and vinegar. That will pull out the swelling and allow for casting with in a day.
Or robitussin.

If surgery is warranted (hopefully not) ask for a nerve block. It can help reduce pain for up to 12-24 hours post op.

No, need to save the Tussin for those super viruses.
Too much Tussin abuse could lead to those super viruses developing a resistance.
And any virus that could become Tussin resistance would be one bad mammer jammer!

Unless she is a big girl then you might want to just skip the nerve block and go straight to a cinder block.

Sounds like a radial head fracture which doesn't necessarily require a cast(or splint for that matter. If fact some don't splint it at all and won't you to start moving it as soon as you can handle the pain.

Wait... who is telling you to come back Monday?
Is he/she the orthopedist or your family/internist?
If the ortho. doc is telling you to come back on monday, the explanations regarding the swelling is correct. Also, sometimes an x-ray would not immediately show a fracture, so the orthro. may want to re-assess the elbow after a few days. Putting a cast to immobilize the elbow will not decrease your SO's pain... the pain is most likely due to the swelling in the joint capsule and not the fracture itself.
BUT... if her pain increases or the elbow feel warm or she develops fever... you need to get her elbow re-examine before monday... septic joint and compartment syndrome are rare, but something to watch out for.
Now, if she is going back to see just her family physician or internist on Monday... screw that... she needs to see a specialist.

nerve block
Just don't look at the needle; they're really big/long for nerve blocks Had a nerve block with my shoulder surgery. I had "floppy arm" syndrome and could not get my arm into an armhole to get dressed.

elbow fractures can be a huge pita, had one and had a cast put on and I couldnt move my arm 2 weeks later when i got the cast off. Good luck

very true...some incomplete fx take 48 to 72 hrs to show on x-rays...that is why re-examine and take the pics then; to wait and look for osteoblastic formation in fx area, or do a bone scan...that will show microfx's alot better after 48 hrs.
