One Time Wood
I used One Time on a wharf/deck project a couple of years ago. I went with the darkest color they make and I have not noticed any fading at all.
The product was very easy to work with and clean up.
Only negative is price-about $85/gal.

Thanks for the recommendations and links.
One more question, the deck I have has a very dark brown stain on it already. I power washed the entire deck, but I did not use any chemicals to strip the old stain off of the deck. It is a rather large deck and I really didn't want to have to strip it. Do you think it would be OK to apply a new dark brown stain on top of the old or would that be a waste of time?

My deck and pergola build is nearly complete. All i have left is handrails and a set of stairs. I used treated lumber. A few questions.
1) How long to wait for the wood to "dry out"? The deck has been complete for about 1-2 months. The Pergola has been up and complete about 2-3 weeks. All wood was purchased new, within a week of the build.
2) What is the best stain recommended? I want to stain it very lightly, just slightly darken the deck.
3) Do they make a stain/sealer combo?
4) What's the best way to stain the pergola? I have to stain the pergola posts (6x6), beams (2x8), joists (2x6), and slats (1x4). Just wondering if i have a lot of hand painting to do, or if a sprayer does a quality job.
5) do you recommend sanding the deck prior to placing?
6) Do i need to apply a deck cleaner, if the wood is new? I'm scrubbing bird shite off the deck today and removing the wood stamps.

That's a good deal. Are all deck stains the same color, in regards to brands? I want to go pick out some stains to test them out on some scrap wood. So if i find some samples of thompsons cedar, for example, would that equate, color wise, to TWP?

Also, can i get TWP anywhere in Baton Rouge?

honestly, you'd be better off letting it go for 6 months to a year before applying any stain

personally i favor brushing. to me spraying it just doesn't properly penetrate into the wood. my grandad said he'd never hire me as a painter if he caught me spraying

no no and no. sanding the deck doesn't help the stain properly adhere to the wood in fact it does just the opposite. use a good cleaner or bleach solution & pressure wash no higher than 1000psi to avoid damaging the wood

yes. but see #1. i think you need to wait at least 6 months prior to doing this.
prepping the deck properly is the #1 most important part of the entire staining process.
if not properly cleaned & prepped, you're throwing money away on the stain and you'll be back in a year to redo it.

THANKS EPA.
because of the VOC levels in the oil, you have to order TWP online (i prefer 100 to 1500 but thats me).
get it now while you still can. if the epa has their way oil-based stains & paints may be a thing of the past soon.
they've already ruined olympic & other brands lowes & home depot carry because they were forced to change their formula to latex/water based a few years back or else they couldn't carry it in all 50 states and the product is shitty now.

I would use the small foam 6"
finger rollers with a paint rod attached. It goes on very quickly, much faster then paint...
Something like this...

i've never had good luck with foam brushes.
for whatever reason everything i do with foam turns out like shite.
brushes are more expensive but as long as you take care of them, they won't let you down.

Next question. TWP 1500 or 100 series?
Posted on 5/7/14 at 10:01 am to DR Hops
100 has slightly higher scores than 1500 but you can't get 100 in all 50 states
i'm pretty sure you can get in LA so i'd go with that.
others swear by 1500 so you're probably ok either way

For stains? I have horrible luck with paints but I find they work very well for staining...
