expecting to be paid 139 $/hr

If someone is charging you $100/hour

Costs (average)
$30/hour
+ 3.5% daily for health benefits
+ $86 daily for vehicle
+ $100 daily for fuel
+ 1% payroll tax expenses
+ 0.5% holiday pay
+ 0.2% Workers Comp
+ 3.0% 401k

That roughly leaves about a 30% GM on that day just on labor. Out of that 30% ($300), the company or owner then must pay rent, utilities, insurances, accounting, administrative help, PTO, fix equipment/buy new equipment, etc...then after all of that he/she may have a little bit left to pay themselves.

Friend calls me. All pissed off because someone quoted him $3500 bucks to come mulch an acre of trees he has.

One of the next big purchases I am going to make is a high flow erop Cat 289 and a drum mulcher to keep up some acreage. I haven't shopped much yet but looks like that's around $125k. I got a great deal on a 16' Toro batwing mower that if I wanted new would be around $120k. I don't do land maintenance (though I've been kicking around the idea of starting something in my down time), but if I did, I would have to charge what many land owners would think insane amounts because of the equally insane cost of equipment, insurance, diesel, and either my time or an operator's time.

I am in commercial construction and thankfully am not constantly dealing with ignorant home owners.

so 186 dollars per day fuel and vehicle means I should be using a ac guy from Lake Charles for my Baton Rouge house.

I don't get it. DO you think that is too much? Not enough?

A daily rate for a vehicle accounts for the purchase of the vehicle, depreciation, maintenance, insurance, and a small profit. Is that not a valid cost?

Because if my installer breaks the diamond plated bird bath while installing it - it covers me having to buy a new bird bath to install.

contractors are probably one notch above a used car salesman

Good contractors are invaluable. Bad contractors are a dime a dozen. They’re thieves.
