Will not claiming repairs on his car help when it comes time to renew his insurance?
Well, I am assuming he had collision coverage, so if he does not file a claim against the insurance for an "at fault" accident, it may help (especially since if it is that much of a POS, even moderate damage may result in the car being totaled).
However, his real problem is going to be from the liability claim.

When she turns 18 tell your friend to buy her a policy in her name so his assets aren't subject to insurance claims by any other party.

It doesn't take as long to disappear as people say. The rate hit won't be more than 30 or 40 bucks a month most likely.
Yeah but we are talking about a policy with a teenager on it. Wouldn't the increase be pretty big considering teens are already pricey and his teen already just proved she sucks at driving and is a higher liability to the insurance company now?

Don't carry insurance. Problem solved.
Get sued? Don't show up to court. Problem solved.

Five years ago my wife's insurance was over 600$ per month on a sub 20k car.
600 a month? That's impossible

Not when you rear end three vehicles in a tank totaling two of them. Then get put into a new car and total that one by running into the rear of someone.
And then get ANOTHER new car.
Fonally solved the puzzle, and her phone has to be put in her glove compartment while driving.

His car is a beater that he can probably patch up on his own. Will not claiming repairs on his car help when it comes time to renew his insurance? He expects a rate bump but wants to minimize it obviously.
absolutely,
not.

My kid is 3 months away from getting his license.
I'd make my 16 year old drive the beater without repairing the damage. Just to remind him how stupid he was to have caused an accident. If he wants to drive an undamaged car, he can save up the $ from his job and pay for it himself. Too embarrassed? Oh fricking well...
My kid already knows that he is responsible to pay for his insurance, If we get a bump in premiums bc he had an claim against him, he will cover it or he wont drive.
Harsh? Probably but it was the tactic my parents used when I was a teen driver.

That's dumb. you paying for insurance and have to report the claim regardless, might as well get your monies out of your policy because you going to be getting arse raped soon enough.

yes, but the broader lesson is to teach my child the consequences of his actions and taking responsibility for mistakes.
If it ever happens, I will then give more thought into whether it is wise to process the claim but my first reaction would be to let him struggle a little bit.

there would be enough struggle to pay deductible and increased insurance cost. mistakes can happen to novice drivers dude, don't have to be super hard dad. circumstances can vary.

At least he can sue his own agent for selling him PD limits below the minimum of $25,000

dad's a bigger moron than son if he's letting kid drive around with 15/30/25 limits.

Depending on Dads actual assets it's not a huge deal. Can't sue someone for something they ain't got.
Making it super important to carry UM on every vehicle one owns
