I teach this course (OHSA 10 and 30), and it depends what you are trying to do. I will say it will not hurt to have it, but the course is geared towards industrial safety. 10 hours is a really high level overview. The benefit is that these do not expire.
HAZWOPER is Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. For emergency management, it would absolutely suite you.
What specific questions can I answer for you?
Edit: My role is an EHS Manager for a Fortune 500 based out of NOLA.

Have you reached out to people who are already in the profession to see what exactly could benefit you later on down the road? That would be my first step. Get into networking with those people and you can learn how to avoid the pitfalls and give yourself a leg up.
As far as OSHA 10, skip it. Get OSHA 30 or take a 500 or 501 if you really want to. HAZWOPER would probably be beneficial but will be a bit pricey if you do it yourself.

If I'm correct I have to have 10 or 30 before I can take HAZWOPER correct?
and for a career in EM, would HAZWOPER help, or am I just wasting my time?

Not to be an arse but have you looked at what that certification is for? It is for people exactly like you.

Not yet. I know a good bit of people and network a lot, but have yet to meet someone in my field, which means that I'm not trying hard enough. Currently trying to get my foot in the door by applying for jobs in GOSHEP with the State.

I know it's not glamorous, but if you can always fire off some emails or make a few phone calls to the offices to get a meeting. Ask about internships or similar positions and have a short list of questions to ask about the profession and your path.

Hate to say this but, yes. It is going to be difficult to get a job in Emergency Management. Would love to work for FEMA, but those jobs in Baton Rouge are few are far between, and I'd like to stand out. 10-15 year goal is to become director of GOHSEP in EBR or Ascension
It isn't about how many you have, its the ones you have that count. BS ones clog a resume and are transparent to potential employers.
If safety, get a cert through BCSP with end goal of CSP; much more opportunity.
IF Emergency management get the AEM, then work towards CEM. Go to IAEM website and find a mentor, then network.
Find a mentor
If you want to work for FEMA, suggest going through their EMPP program.
FEMA EMPP
congrats on degree, but youre just getting started

No, HAZWOPER is a stand alone.

It depends on what you are trying to do. City planning? No need. Front line EMS/Facility Security, yes.

DomincDecoco First off, Inglorious Basterds is one of my favorite movies.
Second, I am a member of IAEM with a student membership and am looking towards trying to get my AEM then CEM. Haven't started the process of finding a mentor yet.
As much trainign as I've done on the FEMA EMI site, this is the first I've heard of the FEMA EMPP. Thank you so much for this information!!

The 10 hour card is nothing. Pretty much anyone working on a construction site has the 10 hour. If you are looking for a resume builder, take the 30 hour class.
