Orthorexia: An eating disorder that few people understand and many accidentally applaud

Apparently following a healthy diet is now considered an Eating Disorder...

quote:

Orthorexia is a fixation on eating “clean,” as defined by a set of rules dependent on certain individuals and the context they live in, said Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani, an eating disorder physician and founder and medical director of the Gaudiani Clinic in Denver. A November 2023 study found that about 3 in 10 participants showed signs of orthorexia.

Another way of saying 70% of participants have a shitty diet.

Most importantly, the author of the article is pretty cute

I agree with the premise that the "is this water organic?" crowd has a mental disorder.

So we should consider potato chips part of a well-rounded diet?

We are so screwed up as to what food actually is.

Call me orthorexic then

quote:

an eating disorder that isn’t in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, also called the DSM, which is the formal guide for clinical assessment of mental health conditions.

Lazy scooter people trying to find a way to make themselves feel better.

And of course, it's from CNN

There’s a huge difference between eating healthy and

quote:

a fixation on eating “clean

My middle daughter struggled with Disordered Eating and we learned a lot about the many different types, how they manifest, and overlap.

So choosing to eat healthy is NOT the same as a fixation on your body image that causes you fixate on clean foods.

More of a well-ovaled diet

Uh, no. To be a disorder it has to reach the level of impacting daily functioning.

They’re talking about people like that woman in South America who ate a highly restrictive diet of “clean” foods to the point that she literally starved herself. It’s by definition disordered eating. And it is becoming a major issue in some populations.

Would a steady diet of eating her a-hole be considered orthorexic?

No question that some of these "driven" folks crash across the line.

My MIL (RIP) went "all in" on the organic food craze and stayed stuck there. Keep in mind, her diet consisted primarily of cigs, Coca Cola and potato chips.

It was bizarre to an extreme.

If so, consider it my official diagnosis.

I guess it depends to what level these people need to eat clean.

Exactly.

And tbh- I wouldn’t understand it as well as I do now had our family not walked through a severe ED with one of my children.

Eating disorders are also one of the hardest conditions to treat as well. There’s not many folks that specialize in it because it often requires a full team of professionals, mental health and medical, to help address it and keep the client alive.
