Thus, everybody is happy. (Except the greedy optho's who want their "monopoly" and ability to price gouge.

You and I both know that I stand to benefit from this bill more than any optometrist in the state because of my unique partnership. I assure you that for me, it is NOT about the money. It is certainly about patient access. It matters not to my practices vitality who does these procedures. I will now not have to make a extra referral for a YAG capsulotomy, and they won't have to wait on B. This is what this bill was about for me. Even though we can agree to disagree on this, you and SN will still get my LASIK patients because y'all really kick arse at it.

You may be the most bitter person that has posted in this thread. I really don't give a damn what you think.

I wonder what the 25 Senators got out of this...

Well the feeling is mutual. And I'm just the tip of the iceberg.

I am disappointed with the outcome here. The legislature was misinformed and so will be the ignorant public. I am personal friends with a few ophthalmologists, and I know exactly where I am going for my eye care when I might need it. If they refer me to an optometrist for whatever reason, I trust that referral. But the MD is without question the provider of choice.

No one has answered my question about how and where the optoms are going to be trained in these procedures?
eta: And for the love of God, learn how to quote already. If you can't learn that I certainly don't want you pointing a fricking laser anywhere near my eye.

While they were voting, the Legislature should've just included themselves in the law as laser surgeons too.
Actually, that's not so far off from what just happened. Most current legislators hold advanced degrees. The majority are lawyers, but even with their JD's they have just as much right to call themselves doctors as PhD's, optometrists, chiropractors, etc. What does it matter if it's a doctor of law? All that matters is that they're a doctor, right??????
It's a pathetic argument to claim, "Well, we're doctors too!!!" Really? So the fact that when you introduce yourself as Dr. SoAndSo, the majority of patients will be misled to assume that that your years of training and broad base of medical knowledge are the same as almost every other "Doctor" that's taken care of them is their fault? The technical argument trumps the patient's trust and expectations? Pathetic.

Dew, no one answered because no one knows yet. The state board of optometry gets to decide how much training will be required to become qualified to do these procedures.

Freedom wins.
That leads me to a question though. Are the ophthas going to try and dip into the optoms' current scope of work in retaliation? Freedom tends to have a heavy cost when those who yield it are bitter.
This may end up being a double edged sword in the long run.

I like a little competition. If the Optometry guys are not good, don't go.
But as long as the Opthomology guys have a monopoly, they can charge a lot, make big bucks, and act all that.
Let the marketplace figure it out.

I have a feeling it will be mutually beneficial just as our relationship with NP's has become. Very few practice independently and those that do generally suck arse and it doesn't take long for the public to figure out how useless they are and ultimately more expensive. I would lose a few simple visits to them, but truthfully, I treated the vast majority of those over the phone. Even those choose to see me know after having more complex issues be missed or more serious illness be written off as something simple. Like one said,"You can have 6 visits there and maybe get fixed or referred or I can pay once here and get fixed." I've since added NP's to my practice and trained them myself. We now have a mutually beneficial relationship that is better for us and the patients.
