My wife bought a slightly used Jetta Sportwagen TDI several years back. Excellent vehicle. When the emission scandal occurred, they gave us a great offer and we sold it back to them. We went with a new Golf Sportwagen Alltrack (they now call the wagon the Golf instead of the Jetta), and it's still great. Highly recommend.

My 09 Jetta got destroyed by a cement truck and I walked away without a bruise. Drove better than any of my friends cars and was very practical with gas.
Maintenance was a bit pricey but I drove that thing 70k miles and never had a serious issue.

Hope that helps!

They built a plant a few miles from my house to build the Passats a few years back and now my home value has shot through the roof. Gonna sell this year or next year. So I like them, but won't buy one of their cars.

Had two diesel Passats in the last five years. Both have been great, as long as you like getting 40+ mpg.

Their electrical systems seem to be their downfall.

Wife has a Tiguan that she loves. It wouldn't start the other day; I thought it was a simple starter issue - turned out the electrical system was shot. $5,500 just for parts, but electrical system is covered for 8 years or 80k miles, so yeah me.

exponentially nicer car than everything else in it's price range

This!!!! I just bought a Passat and I really like it so far. I test drove the Tiguan but I wasn't impressed with the power and over all feel.

Was out looking for a first car for my son. Drove a 2002 Jetta GLS TDI w/5 speed. 196k miles on it. It drove and handled on the road like a dream. Everything on the inside seemed to work, but the interior was trashed. Mostly cosmetic, no real tears, besides the fact that the headliner was missing.

I offered $1500 and he agreed. Haven't mad final decision yet.
