Wut? They’re salary. Most plants don’t give a frick as long as they are showing up for their “scheduled” 40 hours.

Many plants are salary exempt. Meaning they get OT on turnarounds. I guess I shouldn't say many, it's more 30-40% have moved that direction.

My experience is that process engineers start in the 80-100k range (including bonuses). After 5 years or so most are probably in the 110-140 range. After 10 years the really good ones aren’t engineers anymore, they’re in management. The sky is the limit at that point, but it’s highly competitive and very few make it to the 300-500k upper management jobs.

For the sake of argument, I’d guess most process engineers that stay in technical roles probably start to plateau around 150-200k unless they are subject matter experts in a niche field.

10 years out of school, the majority of chemical engineering grads aren’t working in traditional process engineering roles. They’ll be spread across fields like management, projects, controls, safety, etc. Many will work for vendors/consultants. So while it’s safe to say that most if not all will be >100k, there’s a LOT of variability depending on where their career takes them. There’s no one-size-fits-all path, just like with any other career.

100% agree with this, it's why I said non supervision roles. Mechanical and chem that are superstars will move up quickly. I was speaking more of those that stay in technical or project engineer roles in the plants.

Subject matter expert in distillation or reactor technology? I see you edited your post right after my qualifiers.

You really shouldn’t speak in absolutes, because I think you’re dead wrong.

Your right I prolly shouldn't, I should have said 98% of guys that stay in engineering roles will not make 200k. It's extremely extremely rare.

that’s literally the opposite of what salary exempt means.

Newsflash: you’re an idiot who thinks your plant is the same as the rest. What a joke. Go work at one of big boys and come back and talk to me about salaries. I can tell by the entry salaries you posted that you work at a mid major or chemical company.

I don't work for either, but I do work with engineers at Valero, motiva, p66, citgo, sasol, etc and what I said is accurate.

Sure there are going to be some subject matter experta like you were talking about that do make that but it's extremely extremely rare.

Believe wtf you want. Guess you believe most operators are pulling in 150k too huh.

What the hell does that mean? So you're a contractor in some industrial field? What exactly do you do?

I mean, not most making 150k. But most make 100K =/- 10k. That's still a pretty good living, if you ask me. And that's basic, not working a bunch of OT. I don't know what else to tell you if you flat out don't believe that.

Oh I know that's true, but there are not many, but there are some, pulling in 150k.

I am an engineer/project manager for a specialty contractor and I work with plant engineers daily to develop their scope for them and execution of the project.

Btw I'm not saying the numbers I posted are 100% but they are close, at least for the LC and Beaumont areas. Baton rouge might be more, but not much more.

And I was talking plant jobs only, not contract engineers.

How is motiva a mid major considering it is or at least was the largest refinery in the us? Sure it's not Exxon but frick.

Also worked with guys from Dow, Dupont, etc and it's pretty close.

I will admit the Exxon guys I have worked with were higher than the range I posted.

Every engineer I know worth a damn is working close to 60 hours per week every week and not getting over time.

This is false. The vast majority of the Shell engineers that work at OSS are working 40 hours per week and have about 5-6 weeks of vacation. They all work a 9-80 and many travel from the Northshore which means they have firm start-stop times on their day. They only time they are working a lot more than that is if there is something major going on. Same goes for Chevron and all the other majors. Screw working 20 hours of overtime every week, I’d rather spend that time with my family and doing things I love.

Btw I wasn't talking subject matter experts like you were. I understand the best of the best can name their price but those guys are rare.

We could have used you on the unit I work on for the last turnaround. Actually, it wasn't so much the scope as it was the planning. Piss poor. And rushed.
