Opelousas PD owes over $100,000 in police car repairs

So the problem is all of a sudden we have to add $100,000 to the budget that we didn't have to add before," said Mayor Reginald Tatum. Police Chief Donald Thompson said approval wasn't needed because getting the cars fixed was a necessity.
"What happened was that the guys at dealerships and mechanics, they were holding the bill because our budget had not passed and they were working with the police department," said Chief Thompson. But now, both the chief and the mayor agree that getting the proper requisitions and turning in the invoices will occur from now on.

Glad to see they're being good stewards of public money. Why take care of the vehicle when you're not the one footing the bill, right?

This is what happens when a city needs tax dollars to keep spending money frivolously, but the tax-paying portion of the population moved out because they had enough of the money being spent irresponsibly.
The same thing is happening to BR and NO.
I'm willing to bet that if the repairs that needed to be done to the patrol cars were totaling up to over 100k, then the police department has probably needed and been requesting them for a while. Of course a city with the demographics of Opelousas is broke, so the mayor probably kept rejecting the request. Police Commissioner probably had enough and said phuck it.

I do business with cities and states. They say "do the work and when our new budget comes in, we will get you a PO"

Do you just write a new work order and not do the work so you can get paid on the old debt?

There is 2 sides to this.
1: there should just be 1 company with an average cost of repairs and when the unit comes in, they just fix it. Instead, there are a bunch of low bids and it takes weeks to get it fixed.
2: the city should just go ahead and pay it and get over it. Have better accountability of the units so when they get turned in for a bid, there is no mistake made to immediately fix them
