why sleep apnea has become more common as we've become fatter

Apnea promotes weight gain through hormonal changes.

The actual problem is further upstream.

why people develop apnea when they gain weight at astounding rates.

It exacerbates the existing structural issue.

Jesus christ fatty. You can't breathe or sleep because you're fat. You're not fat because of some breathing issue.

The sooner you accept this the sooner you can start saving your own life.

Obesity has a high and rising prevalence and represents a major public health problem. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is also common, affecting an estimated 15 million Americans, with a prevalence that is probably also rising as a consequence of increasing obesity. Epidemiologic data support a link between obesity and hypertension as well as between OSA and hypertension

Yes, it eases the pressure on your airway.

But, losing weigh won’t actually cure that patient. You could get them down to a healthy body weight, and they’ll still have moderate sleep apnea. They’ll still need a PAP machine.

It’s a structural issue.

Ahh, got it, so not being fat fixes the issue.

I’ve always been skinny. Just genetics.

I used a palate expander to treat my apnea. My AHI dropped from 24 to 5. My airway grew by about 50%, and my forward head posture disappeared.

I don’t need a PAP machine now.

No one said it doesn't exist, but you thinking most apnea is caused by structural airway issues is absurd.

Apnea might promote weight gain but weight gain also promotes apnea.

Weight gain can cause a lot of your health issues to spiral.

Maybe it's a chicken or egg problem. My bet is on the weight gain first

You'll get downvoted by the dozens of others that have this problem, but you're absolutely on point.

I have two friends that use CPAPs. They are both true OT baws. Over 6 feet and under 200 lbs. they swear by them and say it felt like they were hung over everyday before using them.

I tried the CPAP years ago but couldn’t sleep with it. I probably need to revisit it

No, look at peoples faces these days, and compare them to people of their grandparents generation. The average person used to have a healthy well developed face. They don’t now.

Now the average person, your people of Walmart, they have a flat face, poor forward growth, a recessed mandible, narrow jaws, both upper and lower. They also have marked asymmetries in their face.

This is why malocclusion is such a problem now, and a problem for the first time in our history as a species.

The average man’s jaw is too small to fit his teeth. That’s why they come in crooked.

This results in everything from undersized nasal passages to deviated septum’s.

Someone read “Breathe” and didn’t recognize it as the total bullshite it is.

Skull structures don’t evolve in 500 years.

What a fricking retard. Dude is saying there's been a material change in skelatal structure in like 50 years.

I was trying to be kind using the 500 years.

I think he cut and pasted from the book synopsis.

It’s not a genetic change, it’s a developmental issue. Diet, tongue ties, mouth breathing (regardless of cause).

I hate to be that guy, but do you have anything to support this other than that hack job of a book? Do you eat raw food and chew for 6 hours a day like the author would suggest is the answer?

I've never read Breathe so I don't know what he's claimed but developmental deficiencies in the jaw due to poor diet have been documented for a long time. Weston Price's 1939 Nutrition and Physical Degeneration has a bunch of stuff in it about refined foods void of nutrition causing developmental problems in Western populations eating sugar/flour/vegetable oil style diets even back then vs. native populations eating real food

in other words, whether you're fat or not, stop eating a diet of entirely shitty foods
