What always amazes me in looking at WW2 pictures is just how young all those boys were.

One of my great uncles was at Iwo. He landed a week or so after the initial landings. On his first day of combat, a Japanese grenade shredded one of his legs up pretty bad. He said he was lucky that it did because, according to him, he got to spend the rest of the war “slapping pretty nurses on the arse in Guam and Hawaii.”

Three of the Marines in that photo were KIA on Iwo Jima within 3 weeks of the photo being taken.
EDIT: Their ages were 20, 20 and 21.

I haven't seen the movie, but the most authoritative historical references do not consider the photo staged. Yes, it was the 2nd one.
IIRC, one of the marines was an American Indian, one was hispanic, just in case the mob ever tries to come for this icon too.

I thought you were going to post a picture of George Wallace

I couldn't get over how massive that monument is.

The only thing my dad would say about Iwo Jima was how much he wanted some ice water.

Yeah that must’ve been him. I remember him. He was 88 or 89 in threads in 2015. He mentioned his daughter Jessica and his own name was Roy.
Also, the OT was rather rude to him. Just looking through those old threads. Granted, many or most didn’t realize he was an actual elderly vet.

If there ever was an OT HoF he needs to be on it. How crazy is it that we had an actual WW2 vet in our presence.

I agree and the OT should’ve been nicer to him. He certainly wrote like an elderly fellow. I see one thread he started was about a time he fell into a boat. All the replies were like WAT WAT WAT. Guy was just trying to share an experience and probably thought we’d like to hear from an actual vet.
