I find this one a little hard to believe.
Game development is notorious for chewing developers up and spitting them out with long hours and low pay.

My son is 20 and is a gamer and is now making 50-60k a month as a game developer and doing what he loves to do. It doesn’t always turn out bad if you let them play games.
Average pay for game developers is upwards of $110k per year.
$50-60k per month is so far out of the norm that it makes zero sense.

quote:The majority of the people talking about phones in this thread are anti smart phone for kids, not anti phone.
All the people saying their son or daughter can’t have a phone until they are 16-18 are in for a rude awakening. You will be basically ostracizing them socially when everyone else can communicate with each other and they are the loser that talks to no one. This does not mean to get them a phone under 10 years old. But by at least high school they will be weird kid without one.

Ehh. I know several families who do this. It’s not really that big a deal if you’re willing to follow through with things and not just give in and post laughing emojis.
Our school has also banned smart phones from campus so that definitely helps with the “everyone has them” argument. Only took one or two for it to domino.
thats fine but its pretty much impossible if your kid does sports or cheer or band or danceline
they have groupme and that is how the coach communicates with them and they dont want the parents in that. They want to communicate directly with the student so it teaches them to be responsible
not to mention how much it sets them back socially etc
now if you said wait until HS...ok i can see that, not really ideal. 7th grade would be ideal for most
and you dont have to let your kid get on social media, you can restrict content access etc
to me it says more about the parent and their lack of parental skills that they feel like their hs kid shouldnt have a smart phone. How do you think teachers communicate? email and through the apps on the phone for assignments. not letting them have a phone until college is setting them up for failure big time and i say this as someone who was one of the last to get my kids phones in their peer group.
and its funny the parents saying this are the same parents that had beepers in middle school who went home and put on 2 live crew and 2pac, logged onto AOL chat rooms and would chat with girls across the world all in middle school

I had to look up cocomelon. Lost a few brain cells. If kids are watching these kinds of shows, no wonder they have issues.
NYT gift article
Moonbug tests its content to maximize engagement. Their “Distractatron” is part of a testing process where researchers observe children watching two screens: one playing a cocomelon episode and the distractatron playing mundane real-world footage, such as a parent cooking or vacuuming.
When a child’s attention shifts from the cocomelon screen to the distractatron, researchers note the exact moment and adjust the episode by adding brighter colors, louder sounds, or faster-paced edits to recapture and hold the child’s focus.
Pretty messed up.

He outgrew it, as will your child. Relax.
You didn’t have an office near a wide open city park during the initial Pokémon Go craze that people had to walk around and “catch” them. Stupid millennials were walking around like zombies staring at their phones. Literal crowds of them walking around.
Some people have difficulty “outgrowing” it. Among many other things.

All of these things are just as bad for a middle-schooler, though. I’m not sure what you’re laughing about.

I have Groupme for 2 fantasy leagues and I use a desktop for 99% of my usage. Same with email, etc.

i also implore you as a parent not to raise mentally weak kids who are pussies.
its not that hard to raise normal kids who arent mental midgets and arent addicted to smart phones

im laughing because we have become helicopter parents. the generation who grew up listening to 2 live crew, 2pac and biggie and would get the hobo to buy them hustler magazines, who sat in aol chat rooms asking a/s/l asking for nudes is suddenly scared of their kids having a smart phone
Its not hard to allow them to have it, restrict the usage and not have them addicted to it.

no but they are going to certainly miss practices or other events that pop up that they are supposed to attend. going to miss schedule changes etc

you arent a parent so Ill excuse the naivety on the subject but pretty common for schedules to change suddenly

what did i say that was wrong?
your kid can have a phone and still be a normal kid. not hard to say no social media, not hard to monitor the phone and not hard to restrict the content
i have an app on my phone where i can see the usage time and content viewed on our wifi.
its pretty simple to set ground rules that you will check the phone periodically
not hard to install password protected apps that restrict certain content
not hard to say...you can use your phone between these times or to make them charge the phone overnight in the living room away from them.
im not saying you need to give a 2nd grader one but waiting until college.....that is going to 100% assure your kid is a complete outcast in HS and frick them up way way worse than the smart phone ever would.

This isn’t debatable. Keeping your kid from functioning in normal society is bad parenting
