I don’t let my kids use Life360.

My oldest got into catching Pokémon’s or whatever it’s called when he got to college though. I don’t get it but he seems to enjoy it so whatever

Instagram has been out for 15 years, you thought it had been out for 10 years. Check my math, but that’s about 30% last I checked

Not sure how old you think I am but you are wrong. I was in 7th grade when it came out, I was off by 2 years.
And of course it took a bit for people to know about it, so it makes sense.

amazing what being a father who is involved and can communicate can do
Exactly. My teenagers have been really easy. They respect my wife and me. We've been strict but always engaged and supportive of their healthy interests.

why does your 7th grader have Instagram?

Or even the 9th grader?

They post about themselves?

7th grader is more for sports and its monitored by us. but he has earned the trust to be able to handle it.

9th because every friend of his has it and do most hs

both of mine really only post sports stuff and maybe a picture or two of them with friends(9th grader).

they dont have to have it and for sure the 7th grader would be fine if he didnt. 9th grade....it starts becoming one of those weird things where pretty much everyone has it and its how many communicate etc. it can become a social thing

both are set up to be monitored though and both my wife and i get alerts if they post anything and we can see who is messaging them and can monitor

but we have also beat it into their head about sending pictures and how every single employer and college looks at social etc so they are very cautious.

re your kids allowed to bring phones to school? They are banned at my kid's school (PK-8)

banned for Middle school but for HS they have to have them turned off completely and in back pack or locker. get caught during school hours and that is an issue

but htat doesnt change what i said...there is summer practice everyday in hs for the most part

You’re either 26 or 27, unless you were lying about being 23 three years ago

iPod touch that they can’t take with them places (so it only has wifi that they use at home)

Other than that I dunno man. Decide who you want your kids to be. They can be like everybody else and have Instagram and watch porn when their parents aren’t around etc. I guess they will probably be OK…. We all ended up ok. But who knows. Maybe there is a better way.

you didnt end up ok

again you are a 27 year old with no kids, no real job all by your own admission

i have no problem with you being 27 and in school, i did the same thing. but i also had been in the trades, owned a house and was married with kid on the way

maybe you shouldnt give parental advice. you arent young enough to tell us how high school is now and you dont have kids

I have been working full-time at various jobs for the past seven years and I am one year away from finishing my degree.

Who are you to say what is or is no real job or what I know…

I have friends that are in their young 20s. I have friends that are in their 30s and have kids. I have relatives that have children of all ages so I think I can speak on this topic as much as anybody who doesn’t themselves have kids and all I’m saying is how I plan to raise my kids… you can raise your kids however you want I don’t give a shite.

hmmm - im not sure if smartphones help more with socialization more than they hurt

Good things may have come from it, but many bad things too

they can do both, which way depends on the family, parents and kid themselves

quote:

kids need to stay away from bad socialization- just like when mom told us to stay away from the troublemakers before smartphones existed but I think a kid would be ok without internet before college - they have time to catch up once they leave high school and enter college - it’s a learning curve for sure but I haven’t seen a kid that wasn’t exposed not be able to catch on quickly

so....they are supposed to do homework how? not to mention research...you want them to break out the ole set of encyclopedias?

quote:

many, many homeschoolers school without internet - the homeschool program we use even has an option if you want to be technology free

and homeschooled kids make up what % of kids

and if you want your kids to grow up to be weird AF socially...homeschool them without internet.

quote:

lol - there are plenty of anti social people everywhere

of course. weird people are weird....want to ensure they are weird and go crazy once they leave your nest....ban the internet

quote:

hmmm, don’t necessarily agree with this either -kids have way too many choices nowadays and parents need to be parents

of course parents need to be parents and guide kids nobody said they didnt

being stuck in 1992 though as a parent isnt going to do anything but set your kid up for failure

let me put it to you this away and if you disagree, thats fine we just wont ever agreee

setting up a social bubble where your house is like 1992 and forcing your kids to grow up like you did banning internet and smart phones etc until college is an almost 100% way of ensuring

1) they are weird ag
2) they cant function in society easy
3) they resent you
4) they are not nearly as successful as they could have been

and you shouldn’t care any less about that stuff if it’s boys - lots of weirdoes out there

Including coaches but sports is king so who cares if Coach Toby is asking Jaxxtynnn about his sore muscles at 2AM - it’s on GroupMe! Nothing wrong with that!

yea im pretty sure i said they should have unrestricted access to every thing right and you should never monitor anything...right?

if you have to resort to these types of scenarios then maybe your argument is a complete fricking loser
