Grant wanted more troops in Vicksburg to lay siege since attacking the confederate forces wasn’t working. Lincoln accepted his request. Grant had less troops in only one batter during the civil war and lost. He usually had a lot more to work with.

Oh, I know what you are talking about. Yes...he requested reinforcements because his 50,000 men would not be able to fully envelop the city of Vicksburg and the 12 miles of Confederate trenches that ringed the city. Had he not asked for reinforcements, Pemberton could have attempted a break out. His request was a practical one.

In the end all that matters is you win and Grant did that. I’m just saying, Pemberton was defending Vicksburg (inside the city itself) with less than 25,000. Grant had a navy constantly bombing Vicksburg and the confederates were nearly out of ammo. Grant had about 45-50,000 troops plus navy, and still asked for more, he ended up with 70 something thousand altogether. They starved the confederates out, but still a win.

History is always about what ifs.
Lee’s incursion into the North might have worked had he been able to choose his place rather than it being chosen for him at Gettysburg.
Even then he might have found a way if Stonewall was still alive and JEB Stuart wasn’t out somewhere playing grab arse.

Was supposed to be Lee’s “eyes” during the battle and help guard his flanks. Very underrated disaster that doesn’t get mentioned enough.

I had an old marine from Houston tell me, “ getting our asses beat by those damn yankees was the best thing that happened for our country and the world.”

Why don't you and the rest of you losers head on down to S. America like the other Confederates did when they got their asses kicked.

The British didn't devote full resources or manpower or used the whole ruthless tactics they did against non white colonies.
Also war against France and Spain same time

The South would have won the war if they took up guerrilla tactics and ground out a war that the North eventually lost the appetite for.
Lee was noble and too much of a gentleman and he rejected the idea and decided to fight the North head on.

I will always contend the war was lost at Vicksburg. Grant never would have broken into those fortifications and was losing men trying.
Pemberton was not ready for a siege. He should have filled his warehouses. and instead of trying to relieve Jackson just sat tight conserving manpower and ammo.
He had somewhere around 25, 000. Johnston had scraped up around 30k. Perhaps the South would have been better served by sending Longstreet's First Corps west, instead of invading the north.
That would give Johnston or Longstreet, whoever is in command, somewhere around 50 to 55 thousand men in Grant's rear. Maybe send along Forrest since they didn't seem to want to use him in Chattanooga and his cavalry. There were more Confederate forces across the river that perhaps could have been brought to bear but the point is ol' Ulysses and Sherman would have been a long way from home and possibly cut off.
