After the successful lunar missions of Apollo 11 and Apollo 12, public interest in space exploration began to wane exponentially fast. As a result, Congress slashed NASA's funding and forced NASA administrator Thomas Paine to outright cancel the Apollo 20 lunar mission. This mission was tentatively planned to explore the massive Copernicus crater:

Apollos 18 and 19 were left on the docket but they too would be cancelled the following year, leaving Apollo 17 as the last mission of the Apollo program. The budget cuts began, however, on this date 50 years ago.

They were getting too close to the truth about aliens. That crater held secrets that mankind was not ready to handle. I used the past tense “held” because the evidence has been scrubbed by multiple missions in secret military spacecraft.

It flew up our first manned space station though. 3rd stage of the Saturn v was the most universal thing seen in space travel to this day.

It was unfortunate but putting a man on the moon is extremely expensive. The focus needed to go towards developing unmanned probes and then simultaneously developing different propulsion tech with affordability being the key goal. Unfortunately NASA blew its money on the space shuttle and then the ISS, both huge money pits and not necessary scientifically speaking at all.
