My Mama suta make an ole family recipe when we got sick she called it "Get well Gumbo" spicy and delicous I guess its a Cajun version of chicken soup but surprisingly soothing and really seemed to work on the common cold.

For a bad sprain my grandmother cuts a paper bag into strips and soaks them in vinegar, then uses them to wrap the affected area and cover with a plastic grocery sack overnight.
Stinks to high heaven, but I'm not convinced it is a cure.

My mom swears by it. My cousin's grandpa was one and he lived down the road from us. She said that when my sister was a baby she had the worst case of colic for weeks and nothing helped. She called my cousin's grandpa one night and he came over, prayed, and did his thing. The next morning she was like a completely different baby and the issues never reoccurred.
