eta: i don't know that as a fact, but the P3 can search a massive amount of area in a short period of time.

See TWA 800 which had an explosion in mid-air. The plane was communicating normally with the ground, then just went silent.

Well, for a very short time it did. After the explosion, which separated the cockpit, the plane actually continued to climb. It only lasted several seconds before the plane rolled over and then dived to the ocean, but it did seem to suggest that a place could continue to fly if the pilots were incapacitated from a similar type of event that did not have a major impact on the structural integrity of the plane.
