You can also throw in issues with excess prescription medication and other chemical intake.

What? Which medications specifically? What chemicals?

Two working spouses here, we rarely ate/eat fast or prepared meals(except by us). Including making our kids lunches to bring to school, till about 8th grade. If you have time to watch meaningless tv you have time to cook
Congrats, I didn’t say it’s impossible

I said it’s harder, which it just clearly is. If society still had one working spouse as the norm, obesity rates would plummet even with HFCS and everything else people point to

We eat more of everything (except fruits and veggies). Saying we eat more carbs therefore we should blame the food pyramid, while we ignored all their other parts of the pyramid is simply silly.

Beef and pork consumption fell by 20% between 1980 and 2017 in the US

In roughly that same period (1970-2010) simple carbohydrate intake has increased by 50%.

It’s been pretty clear for a while that exercise is unbelievably healthy for you but you really can’t out exercise bad eating habits.
A solid 1 hour excercise session will burn 150-300 calories or so on average. That can be consumed in one soft drink…..

Yes. We eat more carbs. I’m aware.

Now do sugar, fat, total calories, and fruits and vegetables.

Shouldn't the WFH model encourage families to cook more healthy meals at home?

I would probably say the situation is the other way around.

If we could decrease the obesity within this country, we could significantly reduce the amount of chemicals people have to ingest.

I am very tired of seeing new onset diabetes in children.

WFH lasted for 1.5 years. I don’t think that’s even close to enough time to have any impact at all

A huge cross section of medications but SSRIs are the easiest one to pinpoint.

There are several studies that suggest food packing chemicals and preservation storage chemicals also aid in weight gain.

Fast food and processed foods were ubiquitous, cheap and convenient in 1987 too. And just as well marketed.

But not everyone was obese. Ask yourself what’s the difference now?

People spend hours a day on their phones, social media, video games, binging TV shows, etc. That interferes with a healthy rhythm and routine in life and certainly reduces exercise. It also adds to stress, brain fatigue and overeating, and continues the cycle.

Log off and go for a daily walk at least.

This is all that matters for people that are truly obese. Just get your weight somewhat in check then you can worry about macros. But to start hust eat less calories. Period

ETA: There have been two significant changes in the last 40 years. Increases in simple carbs and fats/oils.

But the fat and oil increase is an increase in things like vegetable/seed oil and not animal fats.

I'm pretty sure those studies pointed to lifestyle factors as the culprit, which included smoking and low physical activity. SSRIs by themselves do not induce weight gain, unlike second-generation antipsychotics. The latter are far more associated with metabolic syndrome than pretty much any other drug. I'm skeptical of a medication-mediated basis across a population.

Oh I know.

I could eat nothing but homegrown veggies and grass feed beef that I raise myself.

But if I ate 6000 calories worth and sat in front of my computer all day, I’d be a fat frick.

To let you know how disgusting obesity is, an obese person could eat

Sausage McGriddle for breakfast

Big Mac for lunch

Big Mac for dinner

And if they did that for a month they would lose well over 10 pounds in a month. That’s how absurd being obese is

Thanks.

I like how they include “fruit juice” with our increased fruit consumption.

I've said this before to the chagrin of people who don't understand what I'm saying, but this isn't strictly true. You have prolonged metabolic dysfunction when you reach obesity, so much so that you will likely have that metabolic dysfunction even if you somehow lose the weight and keep the weight off. Hence my earlier post about treating obesity with compliance strategies from other diseases, as the evidence is leaning towards obesity being a prolonged metabolic disease that still has effects in certain population groups even if weight is lost.

You don’t need to try and impress us with talking about the .1% of the rule

For 99.9% of people that are obese, if they are 2,000 calories a day of McDonald’s only the weight would fly off of them

You are absolutely as silly as people who say “bmi doesn’t work because I life weights”. You enable by talking about the extreme minority
