I once applied to be an aerospace physiologist back in 2009, couldn't get an interview since all the slots were close or were dropped.

I think I would have enjoyed that.

Tactical AIr Controller
If you are in decent shape, Take a look at the 122 ASOS in Pineville.
Free College Tuition
Quarterly Drill/Flexible
You can join ROTC at a Louisiana School, drill at 122 and become an officer in the guard after commissioning

I am late but will add this. I was army 11b/11m. Had this conversation three years ago with my 21yo. Air Force is the way to go. However, your business/marketing degree won't cut it in air Force ROTC if you choose that path. My son chose guard with ROTC in college. He is now in middle East on deployment. If you choose guard and ROTC path, be committed in your studies at school

Dude flight pay after you finish flight school flight pay is $250/mo, after 6 years it goes to $650/mo, after 14 years it's $840/mo.

As an army aviator after 6 years and a rank of CW2 you are making $70k with roughly 25% being tax free.

Dude this is an 18 year old kid not an officer. My suggestion was going enlisted active and others were comparing sub pay and what not. In 4 years as enlisted he wouldn't be making that as an aviation crew chief/sub position in the navy.

I didn't get past my flight physical that I done in Keesler, come to think of it I didn't hear anything back until late 2009 or early 2010 maybe something changed. Other than elevated cholesterol which I could have had a waiver for, I passed everything.

maybe I didn't have a great recruiter.

Your way has him going active duty for however many years to be a veteran, then living in one of the states you mentioned for a year, then going to college. That is retarded. He can join the guard now, go tuition free to school in most states, go ROTC, then graduate and go active. So in the same time, he has a degree and is an officer instead of being enlisted and starting college.
And some news for you on that $70k severance, if you get service connected for those injuries through the VA, they will eventually recoup that money.

I have read most posts with interest in this thread since my kid is about to dive headfirst into an aviation career. He also really wants to fly in the military but I have a question. I also understand this is the OT and asking for legit responses here is like asking the OT for medical opinions which means I know I probably need to run this by an OSO since he is leaning Marines. However, maybe someone here can help. What is the competition for the Academy kids coming out of TBS for Air spots as compared with the kids who go the normal route through OCS (mainly through the PLC program)? Also, are Air spots a guaranteed MOS? I seem to remember Pilot and Law MOS's were guaranteed back in the day if you qualified (mid 90's)?.

don't talk to a recruiter, go straight to the source(the guard unit,) several ways to skin the cat but imo, being a crew chief or maintainer isn't the best way, if the kid gets into a guard unit, knocks out his college, and they like him, he'll probably get the nod, or at least a strong rec for flight training, if the guard unit is a gas passer or trash hauler unit it would be better to try and get a job as a crew member, that's getting the foot a little further in the door for a flight training rec because he'll have already been flying missions with some of the people that will have input in his recommendation

I'm not really sure he wants to go the Guard route. He wants to be a Marine pilot.

might consider expanding his horizon a bit if he also wants to do the airline thing, although things change. I think the current commitment for Naval Aviators is wings plus 10

As you said, things change but he has pretty well made his mind up and actually told us he would like to make it to retirement before going commercial. I kind of nod and go with it. I actually admire him for having this much determination at 18. Kinda wish I had that focus although I was just as dead set for joining the Marines right out of high school. He is getting alot of input from a close friend and former Marine pilot that flies for United now. It's just a little dated info though.

he can do both, either through guard or active duty, if you go the guard route you can get to the airlines quicker, while still flying with the guard and seniority is everything with the airlines, if he goes active duty, fulfills his commitment, then goes to the airlines he can still fly in the reserves and get his mil retirement, best of both worlds
